Sharing amiga harddrive to the pc for DC++ or DC usage.
« on: October 09, 2003, 11:29:53 AM »
I have a Laptop IBM with a 6.4GB harddrive, win98 and that's to small for the hubbs on DC I wana get in to.

I don't have any money to buy a new pc or a bigger harddrive so I intend to share my 80Gig amiga harddrive to the pc so DC can share it to the rest of the world and get me access to dc hubs.

My question is how to do it?

I have shared the harddrive with Samba but I think that I need to get it mounted on the pc as a network drive instead of access from the network icon on windows.

DC and DC++ won't accept sharing files from networks (ie //amiga/HD4/) but it do accept sharing from a mounted network drive like E: or similare.

Depending on the Windows version you use, you either right-click on the path you want to share and choose "connect network drive" from the context menu, or you choose "connect network drive" from Explorer's Extras menu and then browse to the path to share. (I don't know the exact words because I use the german version).
You can then choose a drive letter and if Windows should try to reconnect the drive on every boot up.

I have similar situation: I have 3G hd on my PC and >80G hd on my Amiga. Only use for the PC is the DC(++), so I've shared Amiga's files on it. I tried couple of ways (samba, nfs..), but then I found that it seems to be easiest and most stable to mount my Amiga's ftp as a drive on Windows. I found Internet Neighborhood by KnoWare, which can do the job. So, that and ftpd on Amiga should be fine, if you don't figure out any better way to do it :) Only negative thing with that is, that when you start the DC, it takes quite while to do the filelisting over the ftp. But otherwise transfer speeds etc are good.
