Setting up a network without DHCP
« on: October 10, 2003, 01:32:49 PM »
Im having problems with my network at the moment particularly with DHCP on the amiga side. Can i manually configure the ip addresses instead and still share the broadband internet connection? If so how do I go about it? We had the network set up this way but then the XP internet sharing wizard set all the pcs to dhcp which works fine for them but on my amiga it can take a few tries (and resets) before it will obtain an ip address.

I don't know about Windows ICS, but with my router if I specify the IP on the amiga the router just uses that and then assigns IPs for the other machines by DHCP.
Restraining orders are just another way of saying I love you!

You should be able to exclude an IP address from the DHCP range  in XP (I've done it in 2k3 server, not sure about XP) for your miggy. Try right click my computer -> manage -> ... ok someone with XP in front of them might be able to help ;-)

Anyway, even if you don't exclude an IP from the DHCP range it should still work (just hope the IP you're miggy has "stolen" doesn't get served up by the XP ICS machine :-) )

Then set your gateway to the ICS machine, perhaps DNS too (if it does DNS forwarding.. 2k3 server does).

Well i just tried to specify both the ethernet ip address of the PC andthen the modem gateway as the gateway for miami to use. Neither allow me to connect to the internet. Any idea why I have to reset if it cannot get ip addresses by DHCP?

How exactly is your network set up?  Dialup?  DSL?  Cable modem?? Are you using a router?

You choose an IP address from the range which is accepted by the router. Usually something between 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.250 is reserved for DHCP and addresses between 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.99 are free for static use. This should be configurable on the router.

Standard gateway ist the IP address of the router. To be more precise: the IP address of the computer on the other end of the cable connected to your Amiga.

Network mask is 255.255.255.0

DNS is either the IP address of your router (if it supports that) or the DNS address of your ISP.

These few things should be sufficient to go online.

Try to ping the router. Try to ping the PC. Try to ping www.amiga.com. If the latter does not work, try it on the PC, remember the IP address and ping the IP address of www.amiga.com. If this works, you gave an incorrect DNS address.

Bye,
Thomas
