OT: Time limited DVD / CD
« on: December 02, 2002, 05:16:21 PM »
Hi
SpectraDisk and FlexPlay had announced time limited DVD / CD technology.
After certain time, the color of their DVD / CD will change and the DVD / CD cann't be read again.

Is this a great idea, or prone to pirates / hackers?
Is it possible to distribute AmigaOS  demo (for PC) using the new DVD / CD technology?

Spectra Disc DVD

Flexplay DVD

I know of a technology where the actual reading/playing of the disk will render it unreadable:

Throw-away DVDs.

I think they were for the rental industry, and there was an out-cry from (too rightly ) enviromentalists.

But, I wouldn`t put it past manufacturers to incorporate  the `changing` DVD into normal sales.
( if they could keep it secret! )

This smells of the original DIVX idea to be used by the rental industry.  Sort of a cheap "Pay per play" scheme.  Really annoying way to handle it.  Circuit City took a major hit when the idea flopped and failed to take off.  At one point Circuit City was giving away 25 DIVX discs with the purchase of a DIVX player and the sales were still horrid in comparison to DVDs.  Hopefully this color change technology fails as well.
