Possible Virus/Trojan warning
« on: September 22, 2003, 10:16:24 PM »
I had three very dodgey emails sent to me "supposedly" of microsoft.

Microsoft dont send out emails, or updates via email

they have attachements which could be  trojans, or spyware, or wreck your machine.  Havn't tried them,

The stuff has aobviously been ripped from their site.

You have been warned
go
Here to see a piccy of one of them

Yeah, I got a few of those too

And also a lot of "Undelivered mail returned to sender" and variations on that theme recently, nothing attached to those, though, just an annoyance.

Also, I've started getting spam at my @amiga.org address again :-|

As did I.

Obviously its a case of delete anything with attachments you aren't expecting...but what annoys me is that I tend to keep my main web-based email 'on the brink' so to speak, and one 120k email is usually enough to send all subsequent ones bouncing....
I like Amigas

Just to keep the record up to date

Subject:        E-MAIL VIRUS ALERT

An e-mail virus, masquerading as a patch announcement from Microsoft, is circulating at Aventis.  The subject of the message is "Latest Microsoft Critical Upgrade" and it contains an attachment with a virus.  Global IS Security has initiated steps to strip this attachment from incoming e-mail messages; however, you may still get the base e-mail without the attachment.

If you receive this message, do not open it.  Delete it immediately.

Microsoft never sends an attachment in any e-mail for security patches.  While the message is a fake, the virus it contains is very real and dangerous.  Again, do not open this message or any of its attachments.  Delete it immediately.  Please remember, all  virus notifications will be initiated by Global IS Security.  If you receive a virus notification from an outside source, immediately call your local Help Desk.

There is a chance that you may have received this virus e-mail before preventative action was initiated.  If you have opened the message and clicked on the attachment, call the Help Desk immediately.

I get around 50 of them a day lately... Started a week ago.

w32/swen it is supposed to be called... based on the sobig virus or something.. You also usually get other mails at the same time, with the topic: delivery failure, message from admin and so on.. This last email executes the attachments of automaticly just by reading the mail, if you dont have the latest patch for win2k or xp installed.... as we all know, outlook automaticly opens the last mail when you start it up, so you get infected by doing nothing... pretty unsecure if you ask me..
