fast ram not recognised anymore
« on: September 23, 2003, 11:05:32 AM »
Hi all,
I have a running system for about 3 years now like this : A1200T-PPC240/060-BVPPC-ROM3.1 1x64Mb, 1x32Mb.
Now for whatever reason I dont have anymore the 64Mb working together with the 32Mb module. The 32Mb is always recognised whether the 64Mb is here or not. The 64Mb is working alone but if I put on any of the socket, most of the time now it wont get recognised.  I am also experiencing random crashes with no more video signal after. I am aware about the overheating problems so I stick a heatsink on top of the permedia2 for some time now.
So I plugged my CV64/3D and installed the monitor driver. If the Bvsion is the problem then I should not encounter crashes with the CV64/3D even if the BVsion is plugged.

Hi lionstorm

I just want to clarify something:

I take it that you mean that the 64M SIMM will work alone in either slot, and that mixed with the 32M SIMM it won't be recognised. Is that correct?

The random crashes are probably due to heat.
When you say you 'stick a heatsink on', does that mean that you do it in a proper fassion? I.E. keep it held down flat, and use heat transfer compound?
Have you considered using a fan? That might be the best option.

Two tips:
-Clean everything, make sure all contacts are clean.
-When the machine is running, feel different areas for excess heat.

Isn't it better to do that while the machine is turned off, after running an hour or so? Static electricity can kill your machine, and excessive heat and/or electricity can kill yourself.

Okay, run it for a while, turn it off, then quickly touch heatsinks, cable insulation etc. NOT the PCB or exposed metal!

Electricity from the motherboard isn't likely to kill a person - perhaps - but I live dangerously - so don't do it because it might be harmful.

And the static electricity can cause about as much harm with the machine on as it can off.

@ iamaboringperson :
yes it is correct. Was working until now. I have a feeling that I get crashes because the 64Mb suddenly stops working.
I took the heatsink lying on top of an old 486 processor, and put thermal glue on permedia and apply the heatsink. Thats it. Maybe I have some problems to translate french to english to exectly call what I put on the permedia2 (fan, cooler, heatsink etc).
