Help with usbscsi.device settings w/ CF card
« on: June 18, 2009, 09:49:03 PM »
In Poseidon's massstorage.class settings, wondering if someone could read me their
configuration settings. I just can't seem to get consistent positive results using a CF
card as a usbscsi harddrive. Most of the time, the system does not recognise the card
and when it does, I get bad checksum errors on some of the partitions (even though
I have set the max transfer values appropriately).

I'm using poseidon's default settings and I don't have problems.

The fact that the card isn't recognised most of the times isn't a good sign. (Sometime setting a higher startup-delay in trident prefs helps).
Have you tried a different cardreader? I know Poseidon can be real picky about cardreaders.
One cardreader I have refuses to work with Poseidon. It's definately not broken, because it works on my Pc.

Sounds like you formatted the card with an amiga filesystem.
Do you get the same errors when you have it fat-formatted?

Edit: Also try connecting the cardreader to a self-powered usb-hub.

I've tinkered with the settings so much, I no longer know what the default settings are. Don't remember if there is a button for that or not, but will look here soon.

I've played with the startup-delay setting before and again, with mixed results. I only have one card reader and its a SanDisk that Trident says either it "kicks ass" or is "in love with it".

Yes, I formatted it with the A1000's OS1.3 FFS, but am trying to read it with my OS3.9 A2500 setup. Could this be the problem?

FAT formatting seems to bring these cards "back to life" sometimes as far as Poseidon is concerned. But I don't want to do that since this is going to be used as an Amiga scsi drive to go between my A1000 and A2500. I'm getting a kickstart adapter soon so I can use KS 3.1 if that's really the problem here.

Oh and yes, the card reader *IS* plugged into a self-powered hub.

In Trident prefs goto Configuration. There you can remove the USB device entry for your cardreader.

Dunno. You could try to partition and format the card on your a2500, to see if it makes a difference.

This is precisely where I'm stuck  :-)   Right now, even though Trident sees my hardware, the icons are not popping up on the desktop, nor is the cf hard drive recognised by HDToolbox.

I seem to have the best luck when I select Single LUN, but unsure about the rest. I'll do the default thing here and see what happens. Okay... not seeing where I can remove the device setting here.

The errors I get are massstorage.class command block failed: nak timeout (10).

I need to know if Fake Inquiry, Simple SCSI, Trim Inquiry, No Initial Reset, etc. need to be checked
or unchecked...

And my card reader is a SanDisk ImageMate 6 in 1 FYI.

Funny you mentioned that. The cardreader that won't work on my system is a single LUN cardreader.
I have no problems with two other cardreaders I have. Both are multiple LUN cardreaders.

Just tested it again with the single-lun cardreader.

When I connect the cardreader, poseidon recognizes it. I insert a FAT-formatted CF-Card and partition and format it with Os3.9 FFS.
All is well. I copy some system files to the card, and reboot.
It just won't boot from the CF-card. When I insert the CF-card after WB is loaded, I get nak-timeouts all over the place.
The CF-card is not recognized. I've tried various settings and yes I did RTFM.
I just can't make the thing work.
If I use this same card in the other cardreader, the card is recognized and I can boot from it.

So it sounds as if Trident doesn't like my card reader then, even though it claims to recognise it? Off to purchase a different USB<>CF card reader I guess. Wanna sell me yours?  :-)

I would if I lived in the USA. I live in the Netherlands, so it's probably cheaper to buy one from your local computer shop.

Darn! Our local computer shop is ALL PeeCee and expectedly so, they're about
as knowledgeable as chimps raised on McDonald's. I absolutely abhor every
trip I make there. But it's funny when they ask what it is I am going to be using
it for or with. When you mention Amiga, their eyes just glaze over and look
at you with the most confounded look. lol

What card reader brand is yours? Maybe they (or another store) will have
something similar. If not, I'll stick with a known brand and NOT buy a multi-card
reader. I guess that's the problem with my setup. When I uncheck Single LUN,
HDToolBox recognises 4 different devices under usbscsi.device, but they are
"unknown" and you can't edit partitions or proceed any further.

Thanks MozzerFan for all the help. I hope this does the trick. BTW: your avatar...
can't tell if that's K.D. Lang or Bryan Ferry...  (I LOVE Roxy Music) lol

The one that works is a Sweex 53-in-1 cardreader.

53-in-1?!?  Colour me surprised to find there's that many friggin' different
types of memory cards out there!  lol

Morrissey and The Smiths... great stuff. I know I've always hated when my
friends become successful  ;-)
