Disksalv has been going for hours
« on: April 24, 2009, 07:29:13 PM »
I bought a second hand Escom A1200HD with 170Mb hd .

The HD1 is full of errors , so i decided to run disksalv and it has been going on for more than 7 hours and looks only 55/60% done .

Its not crashed , just taking ages .

Is this normal or am i wasting time and should press stop ?

With that many errors and taking it that long, may be just as easy to get another HD that is bigger and better...  :-)

So far only found 30 or so errors but something must be wrong

I found much easier to have backups, many times faster than DiskSalv - it did run a whole day or more for a couple of gigs partition.

What version of DiskSalv is it? The PD version is slower...
Why not just format the drive? or, get a bigger one? 170Mb is really small!
I run a 4.3 Gb Toshiba, which may be on the small side, but it works quite well (Has for about 8 years now).
If you run OS 3.5 or 3.9, you want to be very careful what program you use to "fix" your hard drive.

A2000 GVP 40MHz \'030, 21Mb RAM SD/FF, 2 floppies, internal CD-ROM drive, micromys v3 w/laser mouse
A1000 Microbotics Starboard II w/2Mb 1080, & external floppy (AIRdrive)
C-128 w/1571, 1750, & Final Cartridge III+

I have never had very good results with DiskSalv, but know some other members here swear by it.

You really should just replace the drive with a 2gb to 20gb drive that you can find pretty easily and very cheap from an old dead laptop.  I wouldn't be surprised if you could find one of the less than 10gb laptop drives for free, or almost free from many different sources as they are useless in any of today's modern computers.

Then get AmigaOS3.9 installed on it with BoingBags 1 & 2 and you will be all set to utilize the entire drive and partitions larger than the old 2gb size limit.

Have fun with your A1200HD, probably the most versatile Amiga ever produced with the greatest number of third party add-on hardware products available for it.
How are you helping the Amiga community? :)

If it does not move, then the drive is dead and you won't get any result from DiskSalv even if you wait another 1000 hours.

You should switch off the Amiga and switch it on again. Hopefully the drive will unlock by the power-down and boot again. You should then try to copy as many files as possible to another drive. After that you should send the drive to happy hunting ground. It has exeeded its life time.

Bye,
Thomas
