best C=64 Emulators for my Miggy
« on: November 04, 2009, 03:46:00 AM »
Greetings,

Can anyone suggest which is the best, most stable and usable C=64 emulator for the Amiga? Got some .d64's files to try it on my A4000(stock) 16MB KS3.0 and WB3.1 from my WinVICE folder burned on a CDRW so I can install and run it.  I also had a soft copy of simon's basic.
Any chance I could also run GEOS here? I like to relive the look and feel of it from my Amiga than on a PC.

Much appreciate the help. ;)

Regards,
GiZz72

Magic64 is fastets C64 emu for miggy and allmoust all the games work with it. Problem is that it is shareware and you can't register it any more, but ... ;D you know how to use google...

Another possibility old versions of frodo ie. v.2 they are quite configurable and works with reasonable speed.

Under my point of view Magic64 works great, compared with other C64 emus on the classic miggy. Works fine even on a 030 50

But wasn't magic64 the emu that required a phisical 1541 drive in order to work, or it was a64?

* VICE - very accurate but you need an x86 Amiga to run it at useful speeds
* Frodo - relatively accurate emulation and needs fast Amiga
* MagiC64 - not very accurate emulation but runs fast enough on slower Amigas

I have no experience with A64.

I recall that there was an emulator i used to use in my 500 that in order to perform fully, you had to plug in a real 1541 drive. I'm starting to remember that this was a64.
I had used frodo under my rtg miggy, but don't convince me, i think that still needs too much machine to run 100x100.

There were two 64 Emulators around the time of the A500/2000 that used cables/boxes to hook up 1541 drives so you could load software. This was really the days before disk images. They figured many C64 owners looking to upgrade would not want to lose their old software and files when moving to a new Amiga 500.

These two are 64Emulator2 which used a Cable it came with, 25pin on one end to hook to the Amiga and the Commodore Seriel on the other to plug into the 1541.
A64 came with a box, 25pin on one side to plug into the amiga and a Commodore Serial port on the other to use with the cable the 1541 would have come with. On the Amiga side both used the Parallel port.

64Emulator2 was the older of the two. It was prevalent when the A500 was first released but was nut updated from that time.
A64 was the newer and when it came out in a run between A64 and 64Emulator2 was considered better.

Both are very old and therefore their compatability are not as good as the newer ones and running on faster/AGA/or later than 1.3 systems might cause unexpected results. They were prevalent enough, however, that some of the newer ones will allow you to use their hardware to connect up 1541 drives.

Thanks for the tips and info you gave me here. I have not tried some of the c64 emulators yet, so far what I've done, i've already tried A64 package v2.x(registered version) and v3.15(Unregistered), both would run not run properly or fail on my A4000. While I've check an early download of A64, it worked great, the trouble, It's not finished, so I can't access my .D64 files. Magic64 ran pretty decently fast but had some issues with one of my "directory reading" program. I hangs once it starts to access the directory area of the d64. I also tried Frodo (2.xx) ran ok but I know it had issues too about speed. I will try other flavors like vice for 68k.

@pwermonger & _ThEcRoW
Any ideas where can find those cables? I know I had a 1541II stashed somewhere. Would be nice if I can connect it via serial/parallel, or if there's a hard way to DIY would appreciate it. Maybe aminet may also have the answer. Keep on looking... Problem with DIY, I'm scared that I might fry my miggy or 1541II. I'm a total HW idiot when it comes to DIY... shakey hands, sweaty palms.. lol!!

@everyone
Again, thanks for the all the comments, input and, of course utri007, Google is always my best friend! ;)
Weekend is fast approaching and hopefully will use the time to try your suggestions out.

@gizz72
I remember that in the documentation of the emu were instructions about how to made a cable for the 1541 drive. I don't know if the cable supplied with the emulator was special on any component because never had in my hands a original copy , but i think that it could be easy to made such a cable.
I still run emus on my classics altough some people think i'm crazy hehehe.
