can i use a flickerfixer/scandoubler?
« on: March 26, 2009, 02:59:50 PM »
i have an amiga 600 w/ WB 3.1.

my primary use for it is ProTracker, and a GVP DSS8+ sound sampling app. i hooked up the amiga to my lcd monitor (vga adapter) and everything looks fine in ntsc mode at 640x200 non-laced. however pal mode clips off the bottom part of the screen 640x256. using Overscan i can adjust it slightly, but it still clips approx. 30 pixels or so.

for the DSS8+ app its not a big deal because you can select ntsc or pal. but protracker doesn't have an ntsc option and the areas that it clips off are important.

actually protracker > v3.15 has an ntsc option where it will scroll the screen for you... but versions +3.xx are buggy and i prefer using 2.3.

my question is: will a flickerfixer/scandoubler fix the clipping off of pal resolutions (non-laced)?

i dont get any flickering at all unless i select laced modes... but the apps i run set their own display mode anyway (non-laced).

hope this post is clear... i can post some pics if necessary when i get home. thanx!

Using one with a VGA monitor and booting into PAL (via the boot menu, not screen mode preference) should do the trick.

What I want to know is where you found an LCD that supports 15KHz Amiga screenmodes!

Extremely unlikely. This sort of clipping is an issue with all LCDs. Something to do with the way they're designed to have a native resolution. A CRT will solve your problem for sure, but you might be able to get the LCD to comply by playing with the screen adjust settings (IE, don't stretch to fill the screen, etc.).

thanx.

my monitor is an NEC AccuSync 51VM. there is no screen stretch option :( only position, and horizontal size - no vertical size.

so with a ff/scandoubler the areas will still clip? anyone with one know for sure?

I use PAL modes on a VGA monitor via a scan doubler all the time and nothing clips.

It will, if it allows you to fine-tune the picture position relative to the sync signals. Indivision AGA does that, and Indivision ECS will do the same. Indivision ECS will go on the Denise socket of A500/A1000/A2000/A3000. Since the A600 has the Denise chip in a different package, you will need a different connector.

All necessary signals are available on the internal memory expansion of the A600. My forthcoming memory expansion will route these signals to an empty socket that can be used to carry Indivision ECS in an Amiga 600:

The memory expansion (+1M chipmem and RTC, CR2032 battery not included) will be available in April. The new flickerfixer is planned for summer of this year. Fitting this in a desktop A600 will require you to remove the disk drive.

Are you connecting your NEC screen using the usual Commodore silver VGA adapter?
A4000/25MHz/64MB/20GB/RetinaBLTZ3/FastlaneZ3/CatweaselMKIII/Ariadne/A2301
A3000/40MHz/32MB/6GB/Merlin/Buddha/X-Surf/FrameMachineII+Prism24
