Just got my new Asus Eee PC 1000h: My new amiga-like laptop
« on: February 23, 2009, 12:58:36 AM »
I just bought a new Asus Eee PC 1000h - Black
with Win XP Home - 160GB - 1GB DDR Ram.

I have my older Eee PC 4GB 701 - still keeping it just for web browsing, office work, etc. I was limited by HD space in running my emulated Amiga games and apps.

I plan to use my new Eee PC 1000h for Amiga Forever 2008,
Upcoming C64 Forever, AROS, VMWAROS, Amigasys, X-amiga, Amiga Classix, Amikit, Syllable OS (Amiga OS-like)

I don't plan to run any modern Windows Apps or Mac OS X Leopard except for iTunes which I have my iPod touch connected to to listen to Amiga Roundtable.

I also plan to run Ubuntu 8.10 on a separate partition to run my open source apps: GIMP, Sodipodi. I also love Linux.

Another partition will be dedicated to weirder operating systems I plan to run such as: Bell Labs Plan-9.

Now I have the opportunity to run these things since the Hard Drive now is much roomier and a higher res screen means I can emulate Picasso 96.

These subnotebooks are perfect candidates for Emulating an Amiga since its so hard getting a Pegasos, or these wishful modern amiga-like hardware to run Amiga and Amiga-like OS. I wish Morph OS is X86 based. or... Amiga OS 4.1 :) Maybe I'm asking too much.

I will have fun on this new machine and let you guys know how it works out. If only Asus bought the rights to Amiga Inc, we would all have a new Amiga OS.

Cheers,

Amigakidd. :)
WinUAE enthusiast.

Curious about: Amiga OS, Morph OS, X-Amiga, Amikit, Amiga Forever, WinUAE, Efika, Minimig,
and other forms Amiga-like Computers.

You'll be running both AROS and VMWAROS?  For those of us that don't really understand the difference, could you explain?

Yeah they are a great form-factor, I've always thought that traditional lap-tops were far too big to be 'portable'.
Life begins at 100 MIPS!

Nice Ports on AmiNet!

EeePC's are great. Any news though on compatibility with AROS? Haven't checked in a while.

What we really need is for Asus and Amiga Inc.to get together and port OS4 to the eee pc range. It would mean I wouldn't have to wrestle with installing Amiga Forever to my 701SD
:-D

Great stuff. I bought myself a Samsung NC10 a while back, which is almost the same as your new Eee pc. They so good at emulation for the spec. My best mates face was a picture when I took it to the pub and cracked out 2 usb competition pro's and Speedball 2. That was a good night  :-D

I just bought an Asus Eee PC 1002HA. Not even on the shelves yet in OZ.
Same specs as yours except probably a little thinner. I upgraded to 2gig. It definitely is one of the best looking netbooks out there with the brushed Aliminium on top.
Oh and it has N-Draft wireless. So I went out and bought an N-Mimo wireless router. :-)

1002HA/1000H

You do realise that you can boot most operating systems off an SD Card don't you? There should be no need for any extra partitioning, and I fail to see how you could boot all those OSes anyway. I forsee a big mess if you try, but good luck to you if you do. I'd love to know what the compatability is like. BTW There's eeebuntu for eeepcs.

Just for the record the right shift key on eeepcs suck #$%#. Might take me a little while to get used to it. I wish I had a Home key instead of a combo as well, as I like to navigate text with one hand.

But it's really really cool otherwise. I'm in bed, lying down, typing this. I was doing some late night coding in VS2008 and SQLServer2008. It seems to handle it fine. It seems to handle every app I throw at it well. I was shocked when it happily displayed at the top res of my 21 inch monitor too. It doesn't like DirectX games much though, not that I bought it for that, although I was surprised to discover that games from the 2000 period looked pretty nice. Porshe Unleashed, while rather lame in comparison to other PC titles of the period, looks and runs fantastic even at top res. You never saw an Amiga game look this good. Better than Xbox 1 quality at least.

You've inspired me to try out Amikit...now where the heck has my AmigaForever CD got to?

Sorry to say, but this little sucker beats the crap outta Sam in specs, maybe even price.

Edit: And on the subject of OSes, chances are someone will get MacOSX running on this sooner or later.

Name change. VMWAROS is called IcAROS now, and is a distro of AROS. I believe can be run natively rather than in a Virtual Machine as was implied by the VMAros name. With integrated EUAE it could be the go....it's come leaps and bounds in looks, although graphically from screenshots Amikit(which runs through emulation) looks nicer.

I'd love to play with it on the netbook, but I've not got the patience or knowledge to try without a guide.
