Okay, before I get flamed, I accept somewhere someone answered this question already, but I can't find a definative yes/no answer so I'll ask anyway.

I can get a big pile of IBM Preformatted SS/DD or DS/DD 3.5 Floppy disk over internet/ebay.  My question is can these disk listed as 720K be formatted to 880K Floppies my Amiga 500 Reads/writes or do I need to find a different type?  I have 1.44 HD/DS floppy disk... but I have read they are unreliable in this type of usage due to actual difference in construction!

Just got back into Amiga in the last month and want to backup my Workbench 1.3 Disks!

Thanks,
Mike Valverde

I'd say yes indeedy the 720kb disks can be formatted to the Miggy's 880kb. Any relatively modern 3.5 disk that is double sided-double density has worked. I've also heard that 1.44mb disks dumbed down to 880kb can be unstable, but out of the thousands of disks I've used this way, can't really remember ever having a problem with 'em. Funny... I was looking through some of mine the other day and ran across 2 discrete disks: one labled 800kb and the other 1.0mb. Don't know what kind of life they lead before, but they're both 880kb Miggy disks now :-)

works fine for us.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEUSX:IT&item=190287908542
using 1.44mb disk with it, and very reliable.  tested and available for purchase.

to create backups use or see link below for more.
adf2disk etc.

then transfer over null modem, or network card.

Yes, the DD disks are 1 Meg unformated, if you format it with MSDOS you get 720kB of free space, with amiga 880 kB and with a Mac I believe it is 800kB. I've also used HD disks in standard drives with no problems.
