MOAFF: The Mother Of All Flicker Fixers

Hello,

I have an asian contact that makes retro gaming accesories and xbox 360 accessories. Recently at a trade show I explained the need for a RGB to VGA adapter that would work with systems like the Amiga, Atari and Neo Geto, basically any systemn that 0utputs RGB 15 klhz. It would be an external box that would have a RGB input port, users can then wire their own cable or various configurations can be sold with the unit:


For example:
XBOX-PS2-Gamecube

Or ATARi
or Amiga RGB.

I'm placing this messge here to ask you guys to chime in and request features...

Spoke to them at a trade show and THEY called ME to pick my brain on the subject. They're aware of Neobitz and otehr community projects so they see that they're a deman and they can bascially tool one unit that becomes a WII -XBOX- PS2 VGA adapter that will also work with the Amiga. At least in theory. The only thing you'd need to change is the cable setup.

The only non-obvious feature I can think of is maybe the ability to take two inputs and send them to the same monitor.  I know that some people use two monitors because their graphics card can't pass through the 15khz signals from the lower res modes the games use.

Oh, and I remember people complaining about color depth issues with some of the converters.  Like 24 bit color modes were really being modified to 16 bit.

Maybe another cool feature would be to have extra control over the resolution.  A lot of LCD displays look bad when not displaying their native resolutions.  I suspect many people would like the ability to display the image pixel for pixel, or maybe 2:1 or 4:1 for displaying lower resolutions on higher resolution, black bars on the sides of wide displays, etc.

It must have the following features:

Promote 15.75 Khz video into 31.5 Khz (VGA) video

Deinterlace an interlaced video signal.

Accept NTSC input video (60 hz)
Accept PAL input video (50 hz)

Some monitors are rude and they intentionally block 50 hz signals from working.  So it must have a switch to convert 50 hz video into 100 hz video.

Other monitors are rude and intentionally block 100 hz signals from working so another switch is needed to convert 50 hz video to 60 hz.


Accept a wide range of resolutions:
The most commonly used Amiga resolutions are:
320x256p (50 hz PAL)
640x256p (50 hz PAL)
1280x256p (50 hz PAL)

320x512i (50 hz PAL)
640x512i (50 hz PAL)
1280x512i (50 hz PAL)

320x200p (60 hz NTSC)
640x200p (60 hz NTSC)
1280x200p (60 hz NTSC)

320x400i (60 hz NTSC)
640x400i (60 hz NTSC)
1280x400i (60 hz NTSC)

It MUST output 24-bit color (16 million colors) or it is totally completely worthless garbage.  16-bit color is nowhere near enough.

If you can build an external flicker fixer with the above capabilities that works properly without overheating then I will buy one!


Since the title of the thread is "Mother of all Flicker Fixers", it would be nice if it had multiple inputs so that multiple gaming systems can be connected at once to the same giant screen.  That way it is easy to select any particular system to route to the monitor.  I don't need this feature but I know that others do.

You should list the max overscan resolutions instead of the standard resolutions.

The scandoubler needs to sample the entire signal that the Amiga outputs.

Yep...Totally agree... MUST Have OVERSCAN.

And one more Excruciatingly IMPORTANT and without witch, it would be total trash to me:

MUST Have   SCANLINES or the ability to add them for that authentic RGB/TV look...especially or games. I believe the INDIVISION AGA does this.

Maybe even UpConvert to 1080i/p  like DVD players?

ah and one last MAJORLY important feature, have the ability to display SuperHires Mode in a way that looks proper on an HDTV and perhaps HDMI output?  I understand it would be 480i but that's fine as long as its Widescreen. Amiga can normally display 1440 x 480.


so again:

1. Scanlines
2. Overscan
3. SuperHiresMode 1440 x 480 in perfect 16:9
4. HDMI output in 480i
5. Upconvert to 1080i/p
6. Maybe allow Workbench to display 16 million colors without it needing software (Kind of like the DCTV)

Sounds like we are asking too much from these asians eh? :-)

Have them look at an Micomsoft XRGB-2.  AFAIK, it is still the best external scan doubler for multiple platforms.

 Well,I'll keep it simple?
Just a unit that  takes all Amiga video and displays to standard vga-type connector.
 The 19 inch lcd widescreens ,native 1440 by 900,would be a big improvement over a 1950 or 1804.

sounds like a scam.  i have met many asians, and they will tell you anything to get the almighty $.  but good luck to you and i'll believe it when i see it.  The Individual Computers flicker fixers are pretty good...
it'd be nice to see photos or some prototype. :-P

First off been to asia and they are uniquely positioned to carry out such an idea at an attractive price. They already have similar products.
