Installing OS 3.9
« on: February 22, 2009, 09:43:23 PM »
I know there are some threads on here about installing OS 3.9, but I can't find any of them at the moment...

I just installed OS 3.9 on new hard drive my A2000 with GVP 040 and Picasso II. WIll I need to install the original Picasso files to get my screen modes that I had before?

I'm guessing I will need to install the GVP utilitied to get my GVP IO devices working, like the gvpserial.device?

I'm in the process of installing the Boing bags at this moment...

Sure is nice to finally get the latest Amiga OS on my old girl after all these years!

Yes, you most certainly DO need to re-install the Picasso drivers. Probably the same for your gvp.serial device as well. OS3.9 is chock full of patches, but we're still not talking total built-in driver compatibility.

OK. Thanks.

What is Picasso96?

I got the GVP stuff reinstalled, so I can use Amiga Explorer with the GVP high speed serial port.

Boing Bag 2 lock the system up when I try to install it. Boing Bag 1 installed OK.

The Picasso drives from my original install floppies hosed everything. The install went OK, and I switched to Picasso 800x600, and my Workbench looked sweet.

But as soon as I tried to run anything the system locked up.

I repartitioned the drive and I'm reinstalling 3.9 at this very minute.

I just tried it all again. Reformatted DH0, installed OS 3.9. Installed the Picasso drivers first thing after installing 3.9, and the system locks up when I choose one of the Picasso screen modes.

The 3.9 installation installed a Picasso monitor, but there were only a very few screen modes availble with it.

I guess I'll give Picasso96 a try.

EDIT: Yep, Picasso96 (version 2) driver from Aminet. Thanks for the clarity Matt_H!

Oh and yes: using the original install disks your Picasso II came with WILL NOT WORK with your OS. You absolutely MUST install the very latest Picasso96 driver in order for it to work properly.

That's a big 10-4. The Picasso II drivers supplied with the Picasso II DO NOT wirk with OS 3.9. They worked fine with my GVP 040 accelerator and OS 3.1.

I got Picasso96 from Aminet, and I have a sweet looking Benchy now :-D

Should I install MUI with OS 3.9?

By all means, install MUI. I think the latest is 3.8?!?  Go ahead and install that puppy. You'll need her sooner than later.

Re: latest Picasso drivers... yeah, didn't think I found them ala Joerg's site. Must have been Aminet. Time to send them guys some money, eh?

Yeah, install MUI. It's not "required", but so many programs use it that you'll be quite limited in what you can run if you don't have it.

It's a little confusing - you want to install the Picasso96 drivers, not the Picasso II drivers, which are absolutely ancient and completely incompatible with just about everything.

EDIT: P96 drivers are probably also on the 3.9 CD, but I don't know how up to date they are.

EDIT2: Whoops, I see you you've already found P96 :-)
