what harddrive to use in a A600
« on: February 16, 2009, 01:45:15 PM »
Hello, ive just bought a A600 through a lokal auction site..

I was wondering wich harddrive i could mount in this beast.

I understand that it only takes partion lower than <4gb? (Maybe even less) but could i still use a 40gb disk that i make one or two partion on 4gb? Or cant it handle that sizes either?

I ask this becouse i want to buy a new disk, and the todays disks are atleast 40gb!

Common Parallel (PATA) 2.5 Inch Laptop drives.

Make sure the Kickstart version is 37.350 or greater (I suppose you can ask the seller to fire it up, and see what the boot screen says)

Earlier versions than 37.350 only supported up to 40MB (FOUR ZERO MEGABYTE) hard drives.

37.350 handles up to 4GB (Then you have to use Software patches to Scsi.device, the file system, HDtoolbox etc).

A600 can handle any size drive with the right software. As already said check your KS version. (Consider upgrading to KS3.1 v40.63)

I would recommend that instead of buying a new laptop IDE drive that you consider buying either an IDE->CF adapter or an IDE->SD adapter and a suitable sized card.

I'm basically repeating what alexh said.

$2.82 at dealextreme with free shipping

I had a 40 gigger in my A600 earlier, but experienced too many problems trying to exceed the 4 gig barrier.  So, instead of using just 10% of the drive, I replaced it with the said adapter and a 1 gig CF card.

On the Amiga, 1 gig is quite a lot.
Code 6502 asm or... DIE!!
