I asked that same question recently, and the best answer I got was to get an accelerator, but you have to find one of them used.
A1000
A1200 - Indivision. Apollo 1240.
A2000 - GVP 040-16 meg, 2 meg chip, CD-RW, Flicker Fixer, Picasso II, 8 Up, 286 Bridgecard, OS 3.9
A2000HD #2 - 8 meg RAM, Genlock, Tower case

You can either get an accelerator+memory OR just a memory expansion card.  They install in the trap door located under your Amiga.   An accelerator will cost you more $ but probably a better investment long-term, if your just going to play retro-games, WHD, etc. you can get by fine with just a ram expansion.

Your pretty much stuck with the used market (ebay, forums, etc.), as there is nothing currently in production...  Google "Amiga hardware database" and you can find some good write ups on the various models.  Some are more PCMCIA friendly then others.

I may be selling my DKB1202 w/ 4MB of ram if I can get my accelerator back to life.  Private message me if interested.

Get an accelerator. It will cost more, but is well worth the extra money. Most good 68030 accelerators will allow adding 128Mb of RAM. What accelerator you use depends on what software you run. If you really want to try to use the A1200 on line, you'll need at least an '040, and an '060 would be much better. For games and such an '030 is fine.
A2000 GVP 40MHz \'030, 21Mb RAM SD/FF, 2 floppies, internal CD-ROM drive, micromys v3 w/laser mouse
A1000 Microbotics Starboard II w/2Mb 1080, & external floppy (AIRdrive)
C-128 w/1571, 1750, & Final Cartridge III+

are you saying that an 020 is with say 8mb of ram is not enough to get online just for web browseing and downloading(just games no massive files) id prefer not to shell out like £150 on an accelorator

For simple file transfers it will do but don't expect to do FaceBook on your Amiga.

Browsing will probably the hardest thing to do on a 020 with 8Mb but FTP and simple websites might be doable.

I was messing around with a '030 50Mhz w/ 16MB of ram, AWeb  was barely usable.   If you went back in time to 1995 it would probably be fantastic and impressive as hell.  But now websites contain more images and junk then content...  Now a "simple" page might be a few hundred KB to over a megabyte.

If you turn off images and do text only the performance wasn't bad.  But most websites these days aren't text friendly.

FTP, telnet, etc. was excellent but web "surfing" was pretty limited.

You'd be mad / masochistic to want to try either of those more than once.

Web-browse / download on your PC/Mac and transfer files to the Amiga using LAN or CF card.

All you really need RAM for is pre-loading WHDload games and 4Mbytes FAST RAM (remember you cannot use the full 8Mbytes as it conflicts with the PCMCIA interface) is good enough for most things.

If you want more than 4Mbytes + PCMCIA you'll have to get an 030+ accelerator.
