A1200T floppy drive(s) problem
« on: February 13, 2009, 03:53:41 AM »
OK, I finally got this A1200 tower working, but there is some problem with the floppy drives that I don't understand.  Both with the internal drive (DF0) and an external Amiga drive that I connect (DF1), I get the following when I put in any perfectly good disks:

DF0:????
DF1:????

Is something configured incorrectly?  Is there some easy fix to this one?  These disks work fine on my A2000.  This system is Blizzard 1260 (*maybe* -- PCB says so, but it's identifying as 68040) with ONBoard busboard.  Thanks, -Dave

EDIT: It's OS3.1

It's normal for a 68060 to identify as a 68040 under 3.1 as there were no 68060s in use when the code was written. Updating the CPU command, and the CPU libraries should solve this, but it shouldn't stop software from running at 060 speed.

As for both floppies, have you tried formatting one of the disks in one drive and reading it in the other? Maybe they were both badly adjusted in the past (assuming they came from the same source)

Just after reading this again, and you say you have it in a tower. Are you sure the cables are correct for the internal drive? Because the data lines are shared for all connected floppies, so if any one of them has a bad cable it will upset all of them. Make sure it's the right way around, and try the external one on your A2000...

Very strange.  Everything is connected properly (and the external drive and disks work fine on my A2000).  The problem appears to be sporadic, because the main floppy drive started working again after powering down, then back up, and then doing an additional soft boot.  That's a strange solution, and I don't understand it.  The system seems to be pretty flaky --  I think I need to do more testing this weekend.
