DF0: Unreadable
« on: February 11, 2009, 10:34:18 PM »
Yes, that's right. I've got that message everytime I insert a disk into it.

All started when I inserted a game disk which has some read errors, the disk drive whistled like a bird. I ejected the disk and reinsert it again but I get this message from now on. And the worst thing is that I get this message in every floppy I insert.

I don't know if my disk drive went RIP, is there any possibility to be the cable connected to? (because I've heard that)

Mine went through a stage of only being able to read - any writing would render the disk useless.

I used a floppy disk cleaner as a last resort and it's back up and running. Could be worth a chance, only cheap.

That sounds almost exactly like how I've managed to kill three (count 'em) A500 floppy drives. I'm not sure what happens, but I'm guessing that, in my case at least, physical degradation is actually ruining part of the floppy drive (read heads?). It made a very high-pitched screeching noise, right?

Replacing the drives has worked in each case for me.

I don't know much about any of this, so I'm sure someone else on the forum can elaborate.

I have this problem when I tried to format a disk. I got a "seek failure" message all the time.

Well, I have to count 2 disk drives for me then. The first one was a Chinon HD for my A4000 and went-off(?) when I inserted a game disk. High-pitched noise as you said.

So I've bought a brand new disk drive for my A4000. I inserted a game disk (Uninvited to be precise) and I saw the icon. I tried to double-click on it to see its contents and I got some sounds (like the NDOS sound) and then I got a requester about read errors. I never had problems with these errors. I tried to eject the disk and reinsert it and from now on I got this message "DF0: Unreadable", in every floppy I insert. :-(
