A4000 Memory Problem
« on: January 28, 2009, 01:42:56 AM »
Now that i've traded my good A4000D, all I have left is my spare A4000D with a memory problem. Here's whats happening:

2MB in Chip Ram slot = ~700k avail ram
2MB in Chip Ram slot + 4MB = 3.9M Fast + 1.9MB Chip
2MB in Chip Ram slot + 4MB + 4MB = 900k Fast

Battery corrosion must of killed something. Is this easily repairable or should I take it out to the desert and set it on fire?

Hey Pan1k,

no need for violence! Just bring it (or send it) to my quiet cemetery :-) Seriously though, if you're going to be shooting it, consider instead sending it to NorCal!

Anyhow, my guess, without looking, is that maybe on the chips that controls the address bus is messed up and maybe some traces too.

Cheers

Do you think you can fix it? :-D I know you are handy with the solderin' iron....

It's possible. I'd have to look at the board closely or very high res photos. Then perhaps I can spot signs of problems.

Have the SMD caps been replaced on that board, or are they still the original ones? That could also be another source for the problem as it seems to change as you add RAM modules.
