Another Deneb Question
« on: January 20, 2009, 03:54:23 AM »
Hello Everyone,

Just got an Amiga 4000 for Christmas so I bought a Deneb to hook it up to my USB KVM. Deneb works great, but I wanted to make some changes to the FlashRom and now I cannot use the FlashRom.

The issue is I removed everything from it and now if I have it enabled the 4000 won't boot. If I disable the FlashRom it boots fine. From what I have read, I think I need to put the Amiga ROM on it or something like that.

So far I have put the BPPCFix, NoIDE, PsdStackLoader with the poseidon.library and associated usb modules. What I do not know how to do is load the kickstart rom.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

System Info:
BPPC
Elbox Mediator
Voodoo 3
Ariadne NIC
SCSI drives (no IDE)
Deneb

Thanks,
Stephen

When you install Luciferin, it asks if it has to split the AmigaOS romupdate.
If you replied with yes, it splits the romupdate, and puts the modules in the Luciferin/modules/romupdate drawer.
You can install these modules just like any other modules.
Use the Luciferin software to install them in the flashrom.

Edit: AFAIK when you install the deneb, the amigaos romupdates are not in the flashrom. Maybe something else is causing troubles?

Not putting a kick rom into the flash won't cause a lock of the system. First I'd like to know if you're disabling the flash with the ROM-OFF jumper or rather by using the software mechanism (LMB, MMB or whatever you set in Luciferin for the bootloader). If you used the ROM-OFF jumper, try the soft method instead. If it then boots, it is easy to isolate the offending module by selectively reflashing the contents with modules enabled/disabled (flashing is very quick if you only change the type e.g. to Data and don't change the contents or the order).

To flash a whole kickstart rom, you need to add the AlgorKick module and a 512KB kickstart rom file (any name). You can assemble a custom kickstart (e.g. with the boing bag upgrades and rom fixes integrated) using Doobreys RomSplit and Remus tools.

I am using the ROM-OFF jumper. Here are the steps I have taken.

Installed OS 4.0
Put Deneb card in and used installation mode jumper.
Installed Poseidon and Luciferin.
Shut system down
Moved jumper to hold position.
Booted and everything works great.
Started Poseidon and I downloaded the update, rebooted.

Realized that the Deneb was loading the old Poseidon library so I then downloaded the Luciferin update and went ahead and started flashing the rom (after reading through the guide, but not very well apparently).

First I removed everything from the Flash ROM. Shut the system down and powered back up. LED would just flash four times and then go solid(repeating in a loop), screen stayed blank.

Put flash jumper in off position and it would power up. I tried adding the Poseidon stack to the Flash but when I rebooted it would still not boot.

I tried reinstalling (there is nothing currently on the system) OS 4 and going through the entire process again, but ended up back where I was.

Basically if the Flash Rom is not disabled by the jumper I cannot boot even when the Flash Rom is blank.

I will try setting the soft mode when I get home.

os4, if this is what you use (because previously not specified) has a naughty custom not to boot if there is some certain files in the deneb flash, especially an engineered custom kickstart file. at least for what ive observed.

For some unknown reasons (maybe some incompatibility, memory access or timing issue in the 68k emulation), you cannot use Luciferin on OS4. The flashed content will be corrupt and Luciferin will report this. You need to reflash it under OS 3.x.

Thanks for the information. Now I need to see about installing OS 3.9 or just staying as is with OS 4.0.

Thanks,
Stephen
