What's the best resolution LCD monitor for use with Indivision?
« on: December 06, 2008, 11:21:58 AM »
Hi again,

It's looking like I'll opt for an Indivision, so now I need to decide on what screen to buy.

Since it's supposed to work with any 'standard' LCD monitor I'm a bit spoilt for choice.

But I was wondering what is the best resolution/size screen to get to work comfortably with the Indivison?

I'm planning on a 4:3 ratio 17" or 19" screen, most of which have a native resolution of 1280 x 1024.

Most of the 15" screens are 1024 x 768...

Which is the better resolution to use?

Since the Amiga's screen resultions are less than the native screen res, they'll obviously be scaled on the LCD screen, so if I'm running PAL Hires-Laced (640x512) would that scale nicely on a 1280x1024 screen?

Cheers,

Mike.

I think, that a 19" with 1280x1024 is the best choice.
*hint* search for a display that is able to display 50hz framerate *hint*

Most only seem to go down to 60Hz refresh...

Would this cause problems with the display from the Indivision? (flickering, etc)

Cheers,

Mike.

You'd better choose a monitor that has exactly 2x or 3x the resolution you will workin every dimension (X,Y), so the upscaling will be perfect.

One that has a native resolution the same as that you intend to use.

Indivision with Amiga HiGFX back is 1024x768.

I dunno about whole number of pixel scaling (e.g. 4x 320x256 = 1280x1024) perhaps that would be a better native resolution. Might be worth try before you buy? Or get one you can return if you're not happy.

Indivision can support 50Hz but can also convert to 60Hz albeit at the sacrifice of smooth scrolling.

I'd recommend at least trying to find one that supports 50Hz vertical refresh. (Note: 56Hz is not close enough!)

I'd still recommend using a CRT though.

btw.: perfect downscaling to 640x512/320x256 will be a nice sideeffct

Hi Ratte,

Thanks for the 'hints'!

Does that mean you're working on a version of HighGFX that can do 1280x1024? :-)

Cheers,

Mike.

Does anyone know of a particular brand/model of LCD that will support 50Hz scanning?

Cheers,

Mike.

Minimig display compatibility

Look for the PAL support in the table.

I know many of the older Samsungs did, my 711T handles it fine. (Interestingly, an HP I own with the same Samsung panel doesn't.) Something I've noticed though is that LCD smearing can be quite a bit worse at non-native resolutions and frequency. Anyhow, Samsung still offers a few reasonably priced 19" PVA models.

IMHO - a good quality CRT really gives the best overall results. No smearing, no scaling issues, 50Hz usually no problem. Plus, Trinitrons are dirt cheap, free even... (though I suppose it might be worth going through the hassle of finding a good LCD if you're mainly doing text-based work)

@yaqube,

Thanks for that link - very handy! So the Minimig would have similar issues (with 50Hz refresh rates) as the Indivision.

@-D-,

The reason I'm looking at the Indivision, is that I really want an LCD display. I can stick with my NEC Multisync II if I want to use a CRT... :-)

Cheers,

Mike.

Hi,

After a bit of investigation, it seems like a lot of the (slightly older 4:3 ratio) Viewsonic LCD monitors do in fact support 50Hz vertical refresh rates, so maybe I'll keep my eyes open for one of them...

Cheers,

Mike.

I have a 17" VX724 1280 x 1028 ViewSonic LCD, which has been slightly faulty since new (they wouldn't let me return it though, pricks). The image looks slightly grainy, I have no idea why, although I've only tried using the VGA port so far, not the DVI port.

Anyway, I have used it with my CD32/SX32 in DoublePal, using a resolution of 640 x 512, and despite all my efforts, the image could not be scaled exactly 2x2, keeping the aspect ratio. For some reason, it always had 1-2cm black bars along the side.

I bought the monitor to use with my PC, but chose this model specifically because it accepts 50Hz and hoped if I ever got a scandoubler that 320x256 Amiga screens could be scaled perfectly to fit.

Hopefully the Indivision can allow the image to fill the screen. I'd have one myself, except I have a HP Lisa. My monitor may be faulty, but many of my mates swear by the quality of them, so I guess I just got unlucky (I've always had terrible luck with PC parts).

If I can find someone in Australia who can repair my other busted A1200 motherboards, which have Commodore Lisa chips, I'll get an Indivision and try it out.
Amiga user forever.

Hmm... I have a late (Escom) A1200, which I guess would have a HP Lisa...

I thought you could put the indivision into any A1200, just requires a bit of filing on the socket on HP Lisas?

Cheers,

Mike.
