Converting Play16 -> WAV or MP3
« on: November 12, 2008, 10:56:35 PM »
Hi,
I've got an Amiga audio file that opens in Play16 (AIFF, If I remember rightly) and I’m wondering if there's any way to convert it to either MP3 or WAV for an MP4 player (Via software, as opposed to simply hooking the audio out into the audio in on a PC soundcard; quality loss - *shudder*).

Unfortunately I don't have access to my miggys at the minute, all I've got is my XP PC to hand.

Anyone any suggestions for a converter app for M$ Windowz; or could anyone lend a hand? :-D

Thanks,
Hodgkinson.

AIFF contains raw uncompressed audio data with an IFF header in the beginning. So if nothing else helps, processing it as raw data shouldn't be a problem (with a little clicking noise at the beginning).

IIRC there was a program on Aminet which overwrites the AIFF header with a WAV header so that PC programs recognise it as WAV.

However, AIFF is a very common format. PC programs should be able to read it. For example WinAMP should be able to play .AIF files. Just rename it into something.AIF and see what the PC does on a double click.

Bye,
Thomas

Thanks for the tip! I'll try it with CoolEdit96 and see what happens (If it works I should be able to remove the clicks easily...)

The only snag with '96 is it doesn't support any of the more modern formats such as MP3 and WMA, so I have to run everything through Audacity to sort out the formats.
