A500-HD8+ & A1060 Questions
« on: November 22, 2008, 03:22:22 PM »
Hello all :-)
I've just gotten my hands on a couple of pieces of hardware that I'm pretty excited about :-D
The first is a standard A500-HD8+ from GVP, but I'm sure with the number of these things around people are probably sick of hearing about them :roll:
The second is a Commodore A1060 sidecar, which I havn't seen much mention of, so maybe they're not so common. Or maybe people just don't like them.. ;-)
Anyway, I bought both of these because, in my opinion, they're two of the most attractive addons for their respective Amigas (Though I really wish they'd kept the checkmark logo on the front of the 1060 instead of replacing it with a black C=) and so I've completely pulled them apart to give them a thorough clean up, and now that I've got screws and circuit boards lying everywhere, I have a few questions :-D
First off, I'm thinking I'll just give the HD8's case a run through the dish washer (if this is a bad idea please speak up!) but I can't get the internal fan out and I'm affraid I'm gonna break it if I keep trying, so advice appreciated :-)
I'm less clear about how to clean the sidecar's metal casing (don't wanna do something stupid like rust it or scratch the paint!) so some tips there as well would be great!
A few other questions are; where can I get RAM for the HD8+ and is there a certain type to look out for? And how hard are PC286 cards to get a hold of? :-P
The next one's not really an Amiga question I guess, but does anyone have any reccomendations for cards to fill the sidecar's ISA slots with? Amiga-Hardware.com also mentions a '512K + 80K Dual Bus Memory' expansion, how do you go about doing this?
I think that's about all I need to know, sorry if any of this sounds noobish or silly, like I said, I like these things 'cuz they're perdy, even if they are probably better off in more experienced hands ;-) Thanks for your time!

as far as removing the fan, its hot-glued in.. just heat the hot glue with an old soldering iron,or the tip of your glue gun, and it should come loose.

as far as the memory, you can use pretty much any 30 pin SIMMs. just configure the jumpers accordingly. I put 4 4meg simms in mine, and configured it for 8-megs.. (I know it wastes 8 megs, but i couldnt find any 2meg simms)..

As far as cards to use with the xt-sidecar, your gonna want to stick with old 8-bit ISA cards.. those are pretty hard to find nowadayze.. But, other than that, as long as they fit, and youve got the PC software for them, they should work just like they would in an old XT...

Clean the 1060 case with either Windex or "purple" cleaners.  Use a paper towel or soft terry cloth towel.  I would strongly recommend AGAINST using a scouring pad or such.  I've even heard of people using old toothbrushes.

You might look into a separate video card.  Also hardcards are nice if you can find one.  That way you've got a hard drive available on the DOS side of the house.

BTW, you do have MS-DOS and Janus software don't you?  If not, the 1060 is just an oversized stand for the external drives and other desk detritus.

Do a search on this site for the a1060.  Someone here also has one and managed to squeeze an isa vga card and a hard disk on a card into the case.  If you do this, you can set up the PC side to be a file server for the 1000.

You could also remove the floppy drive and replace it with a hard drive.  I'm not sure if they made isa ide controllers.  I know isa scsi controllers exist.  If you can't find that, then maybe an old mfm or rll drive and controller can be found on ebay.  Scsi would be better though.  Because then you could keep the 5.25" drive and put the hard drive in an external case.

@Metalguy66

I have access to a hot glue gun, I'll give it a shot, thanks!
I'll looks out for some RAM on ebay, do you need to have 4 SIMMs or did you use all 4 because you had 4?

@curtis

Thanks for the tips! It came with a copy of MS-DOS 3.2 in the drive, which was a pleasant suprise :-)

@blanning

I saw that picture, it looks awesome :-D I'd like to keep the 5.25" drive, there are a few ISA IDEs on ebay, but plenty of SCSI's for much cheaper so I think that's what I'll go for. Thanks for the advice!

That's not necessary. 2 4meg SIMMs in slots 1 and 2 will suffice.
