CD Rom problem
« on: October 04, 2008, 08:11:02 PM »
I've an A1200 with a CD rom fitted through an IDE interface along with a 720 meg hard drive.
The CD rom is playing up and I'm looking for a replacement CD drive. Obviously, technology has moved on and when I connect a newer CD rom and try to use IDE fix to reconfigure the CD rom, I can't get the Amiga to recognise and use the CD Rom.

Does anyone have any fixes or solutions to this problem. Or should I try and get a hold of an older CD rom, perhaps through Ebay.

Thanks

What specific drive are you trying to use?  I have a couple here that seem to be identified.  If you can't get that one to work, let me know.  I will see if I can't ship you one that I have here.

After you've attached a new CD-ROM dirve, go into the Prefs drawer, run CDDevice and find both the device and the unit number.

Make sure your CD0 driver in DEVS: is set to this unit number and that the DEVICE entry is pointing to the correct device

e.g.

/***************************************************************/
/*  CacheCDFS mountlist entry © 1993 Elaborate Bytes, O. Kastl */
/***************************************************************/
   FileSystem     = L:CacheCDFS /* The name of the game */
  Device         = "atapi.device" /* Name of exec device driver */
   Unit           = 2 /* exec device unit */
[/size]
   Flags          = 0 /* OpenDevice flags */
   BlocksPerTrack = 351000 /* Unused */
   BlockSize      = 2048 /* True, but unused */
   Mask           = 0x7ffffffe /* Memory mask for direct read */
   MaxTransfer    = 0x1000000 /* Maximum amount of bytes for direct read */

... etc
To err is human ... to BOING divine!

Cheers for the help and advice.
I've an old Samsung 32X CD Rom drive that I used to use.
I'll probably scavenge some CD rom drives out of my old PC's i've got lying around and have a go at installing it in the old housing. Fingers crossed at least one of them might work. Failing that, i'll take the old CD rom to bits and see if there's anything mechanical failing that I can fix.
The symptoms of the problem are that the drive keeps opening and closing sometime opening fully, but not always, before closing. The drive also make a lot of clicking noises.
I've removed the drive from the Amiga and it still opens and closes itself. so its got nothing to do with the A1200.

I managed to sort the problem by looking at the type of CD rom i used to use and I just went on ebay and bought the one nearest in type to it. The amiga recognised it immediately, no hassle.
I used to have a Samsung SCR3230 and I've now got a Samsung SCR 3231 -in fact, I bought 2, in case one fails, i've got a backup.

For the two, I paid £14.98, minus £5.00 (a gift from ebay/paypal) -so all in all, 2 drives for £9.98- i'm happy

Thanks for all your help ppl.
