I want to build up my amiga 1200
« on: September 30, 2008, 09:52:49 PM »
Dear Amigans:

I am thinking about building my amiga 1200 into a tower system. I have an amiga 1200 030/50mhz/18mb ram with 2 giga hd. I am saving my money for an 060 accelerator. Since I am gonna have a little money down the road, I am now thinking about building up my a1200 into a tower system. I would then, get the tower case, fit inside an 060 accelerator and a cd drive, and whatever you suggest which will be good for my a1200 Tower.
Any suggestions? Any advice? What do you think?
I am thinking about buying all the parts from amikit.
Any advice?

Amigakit is one of, if not THE best place for this kind of conversion.

Here's a brief list of the essential things to buy first:

EZ Z4 Tower - product code: EZTOWERZ4
ATX to Amiga 1200 Power Adapter - product code: ATX2A1200
Tower Case LED Adapter for A1200 - product code: ADALEDA12
EZKEY-SE Amiga Keyboard Adapter - product code: ADAKEY005
4-Device Buffered IDE Interface (A1200/A600) - product code: ADAEZCDSE
2.5" HARD DRIVE 44-WAY CABLE (20CM) - product code: CABIDE044
Amiga Floppy Cable (40CM / 34-pin) - product code: CABFDD040

Any spare CD drive will fit perfectly fine inside the tower.
To err is human ... to BOING divine!

@rednova,

I have the following for towering a A1200:

Elbox D-Box 1200 w/ Power Supply
Amiga Floppy Drive
CD-ROM Drive
PC-Key 1200 (allows use of regular keyboard from Tower)
Mediator PCI 1200 LT4 with Multimedia CD
Fast Ethernet 10/100 Mbp card
Sound Blaster 128 card
PCMCIA Adapter - change direction
ATX to AT power converter (for Mediator)
FastATA 1200 MK-III Controller
FastATA 1200 GAYLE Adapter

Everything is in awesome shape.  This was a project that I will not be getting to due to other projects now taking priority. The items were bought directly from Elbox Computers and I believe the final cost was little over $700 with shipping.  I will sell it all for $400 + shipping.  If you are interested I will supply you with pictures of everything.

Remember to take into account what you're going to get out of building a more powerful Amiga. What do you expect to run on it, and will you really use it?

Most of the stuff I run on my 060/Mediator system ran just fine on my old 030/AGA system. It basically exists as a glorified mp3 hifi these days.

If you've got a bit of spare cash; what the hell go for it, it'll be a laugh, but remember you could probably get quite a nice quad core x64 system for the same money ...
Restraining orders are just another way of saying I love you!

Firedawg:

Do you have an accelerator to go with the parts?
that way I can build a new tower while keeping my a1200 desktop as a spare fully working system.
Thanks!!!

hm, is it really a bad idea to get a decent modern big tower and DIY? those 'special' towers like elbox cost a lot, esp. including shipping..
Better sorry than worry.

Hey red,

I have two complete A1200 one with a Blizzard 1260 running OS3.9 and the other with a Microbotics MBX1230 XA running OS3.1, I had a loose A1200 board which was in this D-Box tower that I was running with my Blizzard 1260 for a while, waiting for a PPC accelerator.  The main board went bad and I sold it for parts and was planing to take one of my A1200 and convert it over, but just have not had time to.

I have a lot of money wrapped in these items, but I rather sell it to someone here on a.org then ebay it out.  It sounds like you may need another A1200 main board too, and accelerator?

As for the difficulty, if you are pretty good with computer assembly and adding and removing components you should not have an issue.  Plus, Elbox has step by step instructions for building the tower online, and I also have the manual as well for all of the items.  What were you looking for as far as an accelerator?   060, 030?
