Compact Flash adaptor from eBay - Problem ?
« on: September 30, 2008, 12:37:14 PM »
Just received this adaptor from eBay. Check out the circled bits! I've run a meter over them and there is continuity between the pins. I'm guessing this shouldnt be so but I'm checking here just in case ...

That may be correct, or at least not necessarily incorrect.  The two right pins may be ground (or be pulling something to ground at least) ... similar with the other two pins.   I think CF and IDE are practically identical, but there may be a little fudging of certain control lines for compatability ... I'll dig out my CF-IDE adapters and check them for you ...

Mine don't appear to be shorted ... but that doesn't necessarily mean yours shouldn't be.  I guess the pins on the right are the 1st pin of both rows ... wonder what they are?   Does the seller on ebay have a close-up pic on another auction?

I'd be surprised if a large manufacturing plant had such quality control problems but I guess it could happen ...

This was the auction ...

Pins look nice and clean on that one.

Also, I'm not sure which end pin1 is. As I've recently killed an IDE express board plugging the HD in the wrong way round, I'm being ultra cautious now!

Surely not? This is a very common mistake on non keyed cables. I find it hard to believe it wasn't more robust by design for this situation.

Was it a new board?

I think it has two supply voltage pins shorted at the center pins, and the pins at the edge are grounded, so it seem ok. (try googeling CompactFlash pinout)

Small point...the unit you received is not the same as the one you bid on. Maybe me being pedantic!

Sure was. Made a lovely burning smell as well! I cant remember if I plugged the IDE express to the mainboard incorrectly or the HD to the IDE express..

Vendor been in touch about the CF adaptor and confirms its a fault.

I think the problem is in last (treated like first) four pins that carry power supply (if that's A1200/600). if they are 'grounded' bad things happen.
Better sorry than worry.

Matching the orientation of both the ebay picture and my own (now redundant) CF adapter ... pin 1 is on the left

BTW, it should have square 'base' unlike all others which are round.
Better sorry than worry.
