Serial.device 43.4 on OS3.9 CD?
« on: September 22, 2008, 03:18:06 PM »
I wondered if someone could help me.  I am trying to find serial.device v43.4 on the OS3.9 CD.  I want it to replace the buggy newer v43.7.  All I can find on the CD is serial.device v43.1.  I must be looking in the wrong place.  I am looking in OS3.9 Devs.  It's probably on the CD right in front of my eyes.  Thanks,

Dan

I don't think you're gonna find it on the CD mate. The 'Find' function of my OS3.9 found serial.device in these locations:-

AmigaOS3.9:Emergency-Boot/Devs

AmigaOS3.9:OS-Version3.9/Workbench3.5/Devs

AmigaOS3.9:OS-Version3.9/Workbench3.9/Devs

But each of them is version 43.1 with file size 5,288 and date 06/03/00

Do not post links or requests for warez. Warez in our definition is illegal software up to and including "abandonware". The exception is if the person is KNOWN to have the legal right to distribute said software. This is not debatable.

You would be better off asking on english amiga board or another forum where you can get help without crappy moderation.

There are some usable series device replacements on aminet too.

Well, apparently the freely distributable boing bags are considered "warez." (Am I only the only one that hasn't used that word since he was 12 years old?) And if you were unfortunate enough to install BB2's buggy devices, well, I guess you're just screwed. ;-) Maybe you could try contacting Amiga, Inc. Oh wait, they don't give an eff about their customers, so no luck there. :-P

I think the official OS 3.9 FAQ has some info about rolling back files as well, but I wouldn't want to be accused of copyright infringement by posting a link to it.

So, here's what you do:

1. Back up your data.
2. Format your system disk.
3. Install OS 3.9 from CD.
4. Install BB1.
5. Back up any files you don't want to upgrade.
6. Install BB2.
7. Restore the files you didn't want to upgrade.
8. Restore your data.
9. Reinstall your applications.

There's a simpler way, though I don't recall the specifics. The update files for the BoingBags are simply password-protected LhA archives. The BoingBag installer calls a command that deommpresses it. Just run that command from a shell instead.

You might still need the 3.9 CD inserted; I don't remember.

Thanks to everyone for all the help!  I found the file.  It is in the OS3.9 BB#1.  The CD has serial.device 43.1, BB#1 has 43.4, and BB#2 has 43.7 which has been found to be buggy.  I was able to leech the file I needed from the BB.  The easiest way in the future will be to save it during the initial installation.  I have been led to believe that 43.4 is the best serial.device.  If someone else has a different opinion I would like to hear it.

@Matt_H

That's essentially what I said the first time. *shrug* No one's supporting OS 3.9 but the user community, and if you can't go to the user community, where can you go?

AmigaOS 3.9 boingbags 1 and 2 can be freely and legaly downloaded from here, only if you have an original AmigaOS 3.9 CD-rom:

http://os.amigaworld.de/index.php?lang=en&page=12

giving away passwords of both boingbags does not violate copyright laws or licence agreement.

WARNING!
YOU SHOULD ONLY USE BOINGBAGS IF YOU HAVE A LEGIT AMIGAOS 3.9 CDROM

boing bag 1 password is: 93ABDF11
boing bag 2 password is: 3FB6986B-B0AD6339-4FF3254B

Have fun!
