PS2 games on PS3
« on: October 12, 2008, 03:09:48 PM »
Found different updates for my PS3 on the internet. So now I can play xvid, divx, a.s.o ... Then startet wondering -  Is there any program I can load, so that my 40 GB PS3 can play PS2 games ? ... Any suggestions ?

EDIT ..: Changed the topic :-) ... My mistake *LOL*

There's no GS (Graphics Synthesizer) chip in the 40GB or the newer 80GB, so no PS2 backwards compatibility.  The old 80GB had the chip, but no EE (Emotion Engine) which was the other half of the PS2 chipset and was emulated for backwards compatibility.  Only the early 20GB and 60GB models have both the GS and EE and full hardware backwards compatibility.  (BTW, speaking of US models here..  I think the 60GB Euro model was missing the EE also.)

So, to answer your question.  Until Sony release an emulator for the GS you won't be able to play PS2 games.
Time to move on.  Bye Amiga.org.  :(

Yep adolescent is correct the EU 60Gig was a part software & part hardware (the GS chip) emulation of the PS2.

Which was kinda Cr@p really considering the EU SKU cost more to buy than the US/JP SKU :-( and had some features missing (i.e. the EE chip).

But atleast I have some form of emulation which meant I could sell my PS2 to raise some much needed game funds.

Escom A1200, Power Tower, OS3.9 & BB2, HD-Floppy drive, Mediator PCI, Voodoo 3 3000 16MB, Soundblaster 4.1, TV Tuner Card, 10/100MBit Ethernet card, Apollo 68060 66MHz with 64MB, 9.5Gig HD and 52xCDRom

Also one spare unworking bare A1200

They discontinued the models in the US that are backwards compatible too. I had to hunt the pawn shops to find a 60gig to get the PS2 and PS1 playability.

It works well except for some of the old classic compilations (like Midway Classics for PS1), they play too fast.

I guess this info doesn't do you a lot of good since you need a PAL and not NTSC version.

Well there is this rumor:

Quote
If VideoGameCentral is to be believed, it is stated in their product description of a 80GB Console that there is a Playstation 2 Emulator available for download, which is the only way to play PS2 games for our PS3 consoles that are not backwards compatible. Is there something Sony’s not telling us? Could Sony be releasing a PS2 Emulator? Will it be on the 2.50 Firmware that is coming out soon?
