Setting boot priority of SCSI devices?
« on: August 05, 2008, 01:01:02 PM »
If you've read about my A2000 failure, you might know I am setting up an A3000 now with external SCSI CD-ROM drive.  Is there a way to set things up so that the Amiga DOESN'T try to boot first from the CD drive?  That really delays the boot process (all the polling of the CD drive before trying the hard drive).

Can it be done through HDToolbox or do I have to set something in the RDB of the hard drive (BootPri)?
Music I've made using Amigas and other retro-instruments: http://theovoids.bandcamp.com

This should be in the Hardware Issues section tbh. You have also omitted a lot of information such as;

How many other SCSI devices are on the chain?
What SCSI devices are they?
Is termination set correctly?
Are the devices SCSI jumpers configured correctly?

Afaik, the Amiga 3000 was not capable of Auto-booting from CDROM without being configured in some way or other. I do know some big-box Amiga Accelerators do allow this Auto-Boot from CDROM & OS3.9 will, providing you boot from the Boot Floppy first!

Tbah, Termination is probably slowing you up, so be sure both ends of the SCSI chain are terminated. You may also have to shuffle the Devices positions on the SCSI cable in order to Gel things correctly & if you are running External SCSI Devices as well as Internal, the SCSI Termination guide can go entirely out of the window!
Getting 0lder is Mandatory..... Growing up is an option.

Make sure that the CD drive has a higher SCSI ID than the HDD. (for example HDD = 0 and CD = 1).

Now *disconnect* the CD drive and boot. Then run HDToolbox and select the HDD. It should tell you that drives have been added or removed and ask if the changes should be saved. Let it save the changes.

Then connect the CD drive again and check if it boots faster now.

Bye,
Thomas

This is news to me.  I've always believed that only CDTV, A570, and CD32 could boot directly from a CD alone.  It would be great to find out I was wrrong. Grin.

I've heard that polling the SCSI CD drive can take longer depending if there is a CD in the drive, on some setups.  Maybe you could boot with and without a CD and time it both ways.

Is your 3000 accelerated or a stock 68030?

If you try Thomas' suggestion, I hope you post the results.  I'm curious about this, too.
