A 2.5 HDD that Amiga's don't like?
« on: May 04, 2008, 11:20:33 PM »
I got this hard Disk cheap from a local car boot (actually a few in a lot), one of which is a Seagate but when plugged in the 1200 was having none of it. Wouldn't even read the drive spec! Got no idea of the size but it's no bigger then a 100Mb at a guess. Something about it not being a compatible/valid SCSI drive was the error I got from it when asked to read the config.
No nasty noises either appart from the usual loud wirring noise you usually get from old Seagate's, the one thing I spotted was it was designed for Compaq notebooks so maybe it has Compaq firmware installed? IDK...
I have never known a 2.5 HD @ >4GB (especially old Seagate's) like this not to be Amiga friendly. :-?

Have you tried it in other computers?
If not, the drive may just be dead....

Not really, I have a laptop but I don't fancy taking it appart. I'm quite sure it is ok just one that doesn't work on Miggies. Could be wrong mind.

Considering that I have a couple of large IDE drives in my office that have died, but look new from the outside, I wouldn't assume that an old drive from a car boot sale is OK.

I've never come across a laptop drive that hasn't worked on my Amigas (and I've tried around 10+).  The only problem I've had was a really old one that wouldn't spin up fast enough to be detected unless you either did a reset or cut the line to pin 1.

There's no telling how badly that drive has been treated or how many times it has been dropped.  ;-)

I'd have to agree, I've tried quite a few myself with no problems. :/

I did the same thing once about 5 years back. Bought about a dozen 2.5" drives from a garage sale. I had all manner of trouble getting them working until I found that I had to set the drive Master/slave jumpers just like I did on a 3.5" drive. After that I never had any trouble with 2'5" drives in an Amiga.

Each drive was different. Some wanted a jumper, some where find without. I just experimented with each drive until I found the right jumper position for that drive.

I have some 3.5" drives. some of them are in near mint condition. but they do not show up in any of my 4 computers... I am assuming they are dead then... And i have tried all settings (master/slave).
