How to disassemble an A4000T to upgrade? {shudder}
« on: May 02, 2008, 05:21:22 AM »
Hello all, well the title pretty much says it all... Obviously I know how to take the top/side panel off, but how do I get access to the other side, to remove screws holding HDD's , etc. so I can upgrade the RAM on the Cyberstorm?
 :nervous:

And I haven't even gotten the PAR or TBC 4 yet .....

You don't get access to the other side. Just one side comes off and the top and bottom of the case with it. The other side, front and back remain with the motherboard.

Thanks for the info,   still need to figure out just how to remove some hard drives to get access to the CyberStorm. Sounds like I'll be calling the seller tommorow....

The hard drives, CD drives etc are on drive rails. There are two catches outboard of the front of the case - press these towards each other, and pull the drive out towards you.

This can be probelmatic if the catches have become bent, in which case you may need to use two screwdrivers to lever the catches inwards.

If you need to disassemble the case further to get to the CS, you can remove the lower strut/drive bay assembly by removing the four screws at the front of the case around the lower drive bays, and two screws at the back of the case. The back of the strut is also held in place with a tab - you need to lift up the back of the strut (around 10mm), and then slide the whole assembly out through the front drive bay aperture. When sliding it out (oo-er) be careful not to catch the RAM on the CS.

Did you remove the front bezel? Don't worry, I was confused too when I first got my 4000T. You can pry it off in the same sort of way you'd remove a DIP-socketed chip. There are six metal tabs holding it in place, so I use a dull kitchen knife to get between the metal and the plastic and then turn it left and right to slowly pop the clips out. Do this near every clip and the bezel will come right off. I'm always worried I'll snap the door hinges when reattaching it, so be very careful and don't force it.

Hi everyone, Thanks much for the advice, I'm gonna print out the thread for reference, and brew some really strong coffee before working on the beast. Just wish the previous owner would've maxed out the RAM on the CS .... [grumble, mutter]

Having to fit a CS with more ram is a good problem to have...

Now imaginge the insanity of hanging onto one fully loaded A4000T for nearly 8 years only to have OS4 available for it *after* you sell it.

Enjoy your coffee.
Don't break the Cyberstorm

everyone, well... all that I had the bravery to do today was to install 16MB on the 4000T's motherboard, and I had to remove the Toaster and Flyer to get at the third SIMM socket... sheesh.

Crom00: Sorry to hear that. I hear too many stories like this :(

@Boot WB, and anyone else: Got 'cold feet' thinking about unplugging all the HDD cables... I didn't want to mess anything up, so I just left the CyberStorm alone for tonight... I think I have a CyberStorm Mk-III, going from the BBOAH ... Am I correct in assuming that there are no jumpers for SIMM sizes on this board ( I couldn't see any), and SIMMs have to be added in matched pairs?? Can SIMM sizes be mixed??
If anyone could clarify, I would be eternally grateful ... Googling tonight didn't help much. If there is anyway to upgrade the CS to 128MB without taking the 4000T totally apart, it would save aggravation, not to mention my nerves .... (nothing like getting another Amiga to make someone feel like a newbie again)
 :-D
(And yes my machine works fine... except the stupid 'Turbo' button doesn't turn the internal speaker on!)

On a CS MK III / CSPPC the slots 1/3 and 2/4 make up a bank, so RAM sizes in slot 1/3 and 2/4 must be the same.
This is because those cards have a 64bit RAM interface and you are feeding it with 32bit RAM modules.
Not really interesting, but it`s there.
