using a HP JetDirect for LaserJet III with Amiga
« on: May 19, 2008, 10:15:36 PM »
Hi,
now that i finally setup my old printer with my pc (win2k & +) to the HP JetDirect (C2071-D) for LaserJet III ( DLC / LLC type 2 802.3 protocol), I wonder if there is a way to use it on Amiga as there is no IP protocol just the MAC/Card address ?

Or should i find the special and hard to find Linux HP JetDirect (C2071-S) that should you IP protocol ?

No IP protocol? How could it work with any platform, then? (I am genuinely confused.) On the LaserJet4 (with a J4100A), printing a test page through the printer's onboard controls gives a complete breakdown of all network settings. Does the LJIII have anything similar? Might reveal something previously overlooked.

Failing that, is there a way for your router to forcibly assign an IP address to a MAC Address on the network?

DLC, like TCP/IP, IPX, etc. is a network protocol.  Sorry to say I've never seen DLC on the Amiga.  (And, it's mostly abandoned, according to Wikipedia it's no longer available in Windows even.)

Edit:  You might be able to re-share the printer out using Unix printing support.  I know it's possible on 2000 Server, not sure about Professional.  It should be listed as "Other File and Print Services" or maybe Unix printing in the Windows components list.
Time to move on.  Bye Amiga.org.  :(

That's what i think too.
In Win-XP, you need to download on M$ site the DLC.exe to support the protocol. It should also do the trick with Vista-32 bits.

Yeah no IP need, there is a kind of broadcast, no needed server too.
On the status, i found : Revision Firmware A.00.00
But that's work very fast with all my pc..
Maybe I will have to perform a trick with the A2386sx (which has Win95a) to send data...

DLC, huh? You learn something new every day :-)

My only though at this point would be to simply share it via Samba, in which case the JetDirect isn't even used.

And Win95 on a 386? Ouch, ouch, ouch. I had a friend doing that back in 1996 or so. As I recall, it took around 10 minutes to boot. Kudos to your willpower!

I seem to remember from my old support days that IPX can be enabled on the Jet Direct box / card.  If so can you not use IPX on the amiga to communicate with it?  I have have heard of an IPX driver called AmIPX that may be of use.  Hope this helps a little bit.

Cheers

Hi,
the IPX seems to be only avaible for the specific "Novel" edition of this card..
AS you can see here there is plenty of C2071...

I finally found one that support TCP/IP (C2071-S) :
Here on ebay USA
But the S+H is at least $65 in slow way (2 weeks), or $130 (1 week)... I know the HP box is very heavy and i don't need it for my collection, so if someone can buy it and send it to me, i'll pay with Paypal.
Many thanks all

All this for a Laserjet III!?  IMHO, you should just look for a newer printer.  HP 4M and 5M are very reliable, and can be had for about the cost of your JetDirect card + shipping!
