Soft-drink damaged A1200 and its RAM card..
« on: May 02, 2008, 10:30:43 AM »
My nephew thought it was a good idea to place his glass of soft drink on the vents on my A1200, and then spilled it accidentally. We tried to clean the mobo, bake it in the oven to dry it, etc etc, but it still doesn't work.. just complains about the kickstart now with the appropriate coloured screen instead of emitting a low droning/buzzing through the monitor.. I've written off the A1200 for now anyway.

The 4mb fast ram card didn't seem to have any liquid on it, so I bagged it for the future.. until I could get another A1200 for a reasonable price. And I've just purchased one on the internet! I'm paying for the bugger on Wednesday. When it arrives.. I want to put test the ram card in the A1200. If it works, I want to sell it off to recoup my costs on replacing my A1200. What I want to know is.. do you guys think that placing a potentially damaged ram card into my new A1200 could damage the new A1200?

hi,
yes it can damage your new mobo !!!
use pure alcool to clean it, then dry it with soft paper.
Let it "sleep" for 2-3 hours, or use an aircompressor (those at gas station are also good).
Get an electronic spray cleaner and a teebrush, spray well and brush, and let it dry alone.

May be you can do it to your 1200 too !!
but orange juice is bad....

The damage was done about 2 months ago..

When I inspected it at the time, it didn't look like any liquid touched the ram card though.

I agree that this is a possibility, though I wouldn't think it is high;y likely.

I suggest you apply the golden rule of gambling: never risk more than you can afford to lose. If it were my gear, I would do some rudimentary tests on the electronics (I'm not sure of your background though, and this step can be tricky for beginners), and then go for it.

I hope it works out for you. If you have some specific questions about the electronics, it would probably be worth asking again.

Cheers Dude,

Oliver
Good good study, day day up!

It should be fine. It's not like you're going to get rail to a signal line from a beverage spill that dried up long ago.

or use an aircompressor (those at gas station are also good).

Be careful about that... especially those at gas stations. they may have "fog lubricant" (don't know the correct word for it in english) and you don't want oil on your motherboard.
Airpreasure canisters is the way to go. or a hairdryer...
