60 MINUTE MINIMIG CASE
« on: April 23, 2008, 09:09:09 PM »
I finally got my Aminimig from AmigaKit today (and a Competition Pro joystick) - thanks!  :-)

I had already purchased a universal DC power supply from Circuit City ($25) and a Transcend 2GB SD card from Tiger Direct ($9.99).  Note that a Minimig bought from Amigakit for the USA does not come with an SD as standard.

I formatted the SD card to FAT16, downloaded and copied over the Minimig firmware from A-Cube's website, copied over a KS1.3 ROM and copied over some games for testing.  The Minimig requires a 5v DC PSU and the one I purchased had settings for 4.5v or 6v, so I went with 4.5v.  I grabbed an old PS2 mouse and keyboard, hooked up a CRT monitor and turned on the power strip.  I watched with alarm as multicoloured lines flashed across the screen until I remembered that this was supposed to be a retro-fastloader display while the core loaded, and then smiled as the Amiga Kickstart 1.3 "insert disk" logo appeared.

I quickly tested SDI and Defender of the Crown before I decided that I really needed to give the Minimig some protection from the clutter on my desk or my fingers as I plugged and unplugged items.  I didn't have a case handy, but I'd been toying with the idea of housing the Minimig inside a PC keyboard...

I grabbed my Dremel cutting tools, a Stanley knife, some tape, a scissors and a spare eMachines PS2 keyboard and went to work.  Less than 60 minutes later I had this:

The top keyboard is the housed Minimig while the one below it is my actual PC keyboard.

Here's a shot with them flipped over:

As you can see, I used the Dremel to cut out some of the plastic molding, screwed the Minimig to the bottom of the keyboard, shortened the PC keyboard cord by 2 and a half feet (which took the most time) and added a couple of white rubber feet to the front to raise it up as a chip on the Minimig was hitting the desk.  The SD card can be easily removed or inserted by just flipping the keyboard over.

Finally I hooked it up to a wide screen LCD for some games testing... and got no display.  :-(

I tracked down the beta core that allows 60kHz monitors to be used, added the required jumpers and got this:

OK, it's a bodge job and I'll admit it, but a $10 PC keyboard and half an hour is better than leaving a bare board on your desk.  Now I'm off to test some games...

You could actually make this a slick case if you just made a plastic shield that covered the MiniMig under the keyboard.

I agree, however I'd need to either have it on a hinge or have gaps to access the ports.

The problem with putting the Minimig in almost any sort of "off the shelf" case is that there are ports on 3 different sides of the motherboard.  With a little more time they could be extended, but this was all about speed.  :-)

The deluxe keytonic black keyboard would work well as it has fatter cuved back with lots of space for this. I alsread have the cable extensions for this. Does anyone know where to get ribbon cable extenders for all the ports on the mini-mig this is a great solution. I would like to dremel holes for all the ports on the back except the SD card.

I can't help with the ribbons, but someone is designing their own Minimig board with headers to each of the ports so that they can be easily relocated.  Sure it added more cost to the manufacturing, but it will certainly help to fit it in almost any casing.

Yes, sorry I had it on "full".  I could also set it for 1:1 where it pixel matches the Amiga display, but you get a small image in the center with huge borders, or "aspect" where the screen touches the top and bottom of the display and has blank bars down either side.

With games like DotC it doesn't matter if the display is streched.  I guess it could be a pain for platformers where every pixel counts.   :-)

You should really send the link of this post to the makers of the MiniMig so they could showcase how you are doing.  It would also make a good blog; It would promote the MiniMig.

If you are going to deal with SD cards, at some point you may want a file back and you should invest in some file rescue software.  This image rescue software works with cameras but you need to have the SD card plugged into a USB adapter on an IBM:

Maybe someone can develop software for the MiniMig to do the same.

I wish you the best of luck with your (new hardware) MiniMig.

As long as it's not on a nylon carpet then it's OK.  :-)

Here's a list of the software I've tested so far using the 60kHz core set for PAL and KS1.3:

I can suggest that P4-under-the-keyboard solution for the Minimig. Don't remember the vendor's site.

It will be a very nice solution to Minimig, if someone route the ports to the back side of that ugly, tefthy design! :inquisitive:
Goodbye people.

I\'ll pop on from time to time, RL is acting up.
