it installs and partitions but don't show on the desktop! it's a 2.3gb wd drive with 2 partitions about 1gb each. it's master on the 2nd channel with a cdrom as slave. the cd works it's os 3.9 with ide fix...

Check the drives on the first channel with HDToolbox. If one of them (or both) comes up with a requester "drives have been added or removed", let it save the changes.

Make sure that the IDEfix program is run at the beginning of startup-sequence. The CD drive can work without, but but for the HDD on the second channel, the IDEfix software must be running.

If IDEfix was not running, would the device even show in HDToolBox to let you install and partition it? Maybe the problem is that the device has been hidden from view in Workbench prefs?

Hi

Seem to be quoting Eyetech a lot tonight... From their very informative tech sheet on this they state... STAGE 4.. The next stage is to connect your hard drive. In order to boot from a HD attached to your interface it must be connected to Channel 1, sometimes called the Primary Port or Channel. If you are using a 3.5" HD it must be set to master.

You only need the C:IDEFix line below C:SETPATCH in your startup-sequence if you intend using Channel 2 to connect a HD or removeable media drive ( LS120/ZIP )

Usually the normal preferred configuration for HD's & CDs are as follows:

1 x HD & CDROM ...
Channel 1 Master Hard Drive
          Slave
Channel 2 Master CDROM

I would check Channels.. Channel 1 should be the 40 Way IDE next to the 44 Way small, more central on the buffered interface. i.e. not the one on the edge of the board. Channel 1 is also known as Port 0.

They go left to right : Pin 1 at the bottom
40-way Port 1 [ Channel 2 ] Far left
40-way Port 0 [ Channel 1 ]
gap
44-way smaller Port 0 [ Channel 1 ]
44-way smaller Input Port [ To Amiga ] Far right

PS What do you see on the early boot screen with both mouse buttons depressed...

idefix is mentioned in the startup sequence. the floppy ezide readme i have says add "c:idefix" after "c:setpatch quiet." "c:setpatch quiet" is not in there?

"In order to boot from a HD attached to your interface it must be connected to Channel 1, sometimes called the Primary Port or Channel."

i just want that one as a storage drive is that still ok. it is in a removeable drive bay and set to master. the cd rom on that chain is set to slave.

edit : no the hd is not there in the early start up menu. i installed and partitioned it and expected it to be on the desktop to format after reboot and nothing.

If your startup-sequence looks like this:

Code: [Select]

; $VER: Startup-Sequence 45.4 (4.4.2001)
; Startup-Sequence for AmigaOS 3.9

; The following lines disable updating "scsi.device" for driver
; software where this could lead to failures. They also start
; IDEFix if installed.
;
; You can manually disable updating "scsi.device" by setting
; the environment variable "NOSCSIUPDATE" to something.

If EXISTS C:SquirrelSCSI
    C:SquirrelSCSI
EndIf

Set SCSIUpdate 1
If EXISTS C:IDEFix
    C:IDEFix
    Set SCSIUpdate 0
EndIf
If EXISTS SYS:Expansion/XSurfIDE
    Set SCSIUpdate 0
EndIf
If EXISTS SYS:Prefs/Env-Archive/NOSCSIUPDATE
    Set SCSIUpdate 0
EndIf
If $SCSIUpdate EQ 1
    SetPatch QUIET
Else
    SetPatch SKIPROMUPDATES "scsi.device" QUIET
EndIf
Unset SCSIUpdate

then you shouldn't need to change anything. Just make sure that IDEfix is in C.

Bye,
Thomas

well i went all through my startup sequence trying to find setpatch and didn't see c:idefix was already there as in your sequence.

i have checked the bootable box in hdtoolbox and in mounter it says fixed and ready. but it's not there on the desktop...

Hi

Did you say you had scanned for the drive using the IDEFix software... this will show the hard drive its make etc. Why don`t you just swap the Channel over and see what happens.

i have 2 hd's on the 1st channel. i am keeping them small. the 1st hd is a 3gb drive the 2nd is a 6.4gb drive but only partitioned up 3.9gb. because all that other "over 4gb" stuff is too confusing and i don't want to risk losing anything. i still would like to add a bit more and so am using a removeable drive bay and a wd 2gb hd for storage. it's just odd whats going on...

ok i will do a test and see if it turns up on the other channel.

Hi

Well done. We get there in the end. Using an Amiga is like walking down a corridor and finding a locked door. You can either just give up or try a long route round through several doors. As I say... you get there in the end, just takes a bit longer.

Being an Amigan really means not giving up. :-)

Happy days

i had an earlier thread but i can't find it now. where in the old config the 6.4 drive would not put the partition above 4gb on the desktop. now it's solved the rest of the drive shows on the desktop. but i am so confused. and getting more so.

if i use os 3.9 and idefix am i ok to do what i like with big drives and be safe with them? help! i read you should only quick format drives over the 4gb barrier. this 6.4gb drive has 2 partitions of 1.9gb and last night i formatted the rest 2.1gb as it now shows up. i did a long format as i was curious if it would crap out on me. and all went ok. i copied files and filled the drive and rebooted. and everything is fine on all drives. is this expected behaviour? i'm confused.
