WHDload trouble - help..
« on: April 13, 2008, 02:54:38 PM »
Hi, got a system going to do WHD load games, and went pretty good but my 1st slave game won't run.

System is:
3.1 roms / 1.3 rom switcher
Amiga OS 3.1
2.5 MB ram

I got a rom 1.3 image with grabber utility, it seemed to save it as a file named '?' on the drive, is this normal? I renamed it and put it in the devs:kickstarts directory. And that other file kick34005.A500.RT8 from aminet there too.

WHD load installed fine. I was testing Mission Impossible II; put the disk in when prompted and it completed fine I think. When I click on the slave icon, it loads up WHDLoad (i get the you should register screen).

Then a little pause and I get a dos error of 'not of required type' ? hmm. It never even hit the HD I think, just quit.

I looked at the slave icon, tooltype is set to whdload and that is good but the 'slave=' entry is just blank? What should be there, the mygame.slave file?

So, I'm trying to figure is this a user issue before I go further? There are some definite missing steps in the WHD load docs ; I think the newbie would only find.

------------EDIT----------------------------

Ok, got a bit further. Yes, you do need to set the tool
type 'slave=mygame.slave' Then it will start to load
the next part.

Closer, but still won't run. I get to the point where
the rom image has been loaded, and comes back to the old
blue 1.3 screens. There it just sort of blinks in a cycle
and gets stuck.

EDIT - WAIT I was wrong. In fact after some time, as I
write, the game indeed did load! But there is still some odd blinking and flashing. Un-playble at this point,
but I'm getting more encouraged.

Any ideas on the screen flashing ?

:-)

-----------EDIT--------------------

Well after some reading and experiments, seems to me
like the bottle neck is occurring after the 1.3 rom is
soft kicked. Flashing i think is actually, watching how
fast all this can run on my 68000. ? This is as fast as the
screen can be updated?

Odd bits are there though, a few moments on opening
animations are completely fluid. Makes you wonder.

I may try to install the slave with a different option(s)
set. I am convinced now that my rom is perfect. I may
move on and try another game too, see if the results are
the same.

Ok, had some success with a Marble Madness install.
Absolutely now problems and got to like the 5th level on
my first go!

So, I am in the mind to blame this MI2 install. it just
seems buggy.

Looking to try another now...

Ok my last post to this thread. Should be re-titled "dumb guy tries to install WHDload" :rtfm:

I got K240 installed and running! I never even opened the box, bought it 2nd hand years ago. Anyway, a huge 3 disker and it all went down good. Looks like a cool strategy game too.

So this just furthers my thought that IM2 installer is just not right somehow. Guess I'll get registered with WHDload now that I can see some stuff working.

Any other OCS / WHDload machines out there? Any stories? Good games to find?

Try Magic Pockets, it's great!

The flashing screen in WHDLoad switching back to the system to load files.  Try adding PRELOAD to the tooltypes to see if it helps.
Time to move on.  Bye Amiga.org.  :(
