Amithlon Software
« on: August 09, 2003, 06:23:32 AM »
I'm a bit of a newbie returning to the Amiga scene.

What do I need to get up and running with Amithlon? This is what I'd like to be able to do:

- browse web
- email
- IRC & MSN
- work with documents and spreadsheets (preferably .doc and .xls files)
- write Amiga software (I'm a programmer by profession). Need a C/C++ editor, debugger and compiler and Amiga specific library info (SDK?)
- connect to a Windows network
- image browser like ACDsee
- file manager (DOPus?)

Cheers.

To:

- browse web

Use Voyager, IBrowse or AWeb

- email

Use YAM

- IRC & MSN

There are IRC clients for AOS (AmIRC for one) but I don't know about MSN

- work with documents and spreadsheets (preferably .doc and .xls files)

Office apps for AOS are a bit thin on the ground, probably haven't been updated in years and more than likely do not support MS Office formatted documents

- write Amiga software (I'm a programmer by profession). Need a C/C++ editor, debugger and compiler and Amiga specific library info (SDK?)

Try StormC++, Hisoft C++, DICE or gcc

- connect to a Windows network

Samba with AmiTCP or Miami

- image browser like ACDsee

Try Collecter or PhotoPholio

- file manager (DOPus?)

Try Opus Magellan

Frogger and MooVId can both handle DIVX, Frogger can handle DVD.

For MSN chat try Jabberwocky.  Jabberwocky is an implementation of the Jabber client which also has 'transports' to chat with MSN, AIM, YIM, and ICQ users (provided you have an account with the respective chat protocol).

It's slightly rough to get set up with Jabberwocky, but once you've configured it properly it's nice to have simply one chat program for all the different transports.
