Help me not have to sift through AmiNet

I'm looking for a couple of pieces of software, of which there seems to be many options on Aminet.  Rather than download and try all of them, I thought I'd ask on here for opinions.

First, I'm looking for a file manager similar to Midnight Commander/Xtree Gold, so that I can cut down on having to  jump down to the CLI to navigate the HDD.  I did see that Midnight Commander (my favorite from linux/bsd) is available, but I was wondering if anyone had recommendations for anything that's more workbench friendly.

Second, I'm looking for a GUI interface for archives, mostly LHA, but if there's a one stop shop, I'm down with that, too.  I downloaded LHArchie, but wasn't terribly impressed.

If there's a good solution that combines these two 'wants', I'd be all over that, too.

This is for an ECS Amiga 2000, 1 MB chip, 4 MB fast, 68030 25 Mhz, with 3.1 Roms/Workbench on a 2 GB HDD.

No doubt you will want DirectoryOpus4.x in my opinion... you can do it all there (some will no doubt come and say you should get version 5.x but that one is not to my taste).

The Amiga is blessed with a multitude of "directory utilities", perhaps more than any other platform. Also, the quality and usefulness of Amigas dirutils were better, IMHO.  Some were ported to other platforms.  Checkout Worker on Linux.

These are some of the best available for Amiga on Aminet:

Directory Opus - probably the most configurable.  You can dl other ppls config files and see how they are using it.

Ordering - lightning fast even at 7 Mhz, one of my favs.

DiskMaster - enjoys a large following

ClickDos - older, very small, fits on a boot floppy

Sid - older but good, eclipsed by the top 3 above

Directory Opus 4 and 5 are the best I have come across.
Currently use 4 under OS4 and 5.5 under 3.9.
Both have their following but you can't lose either way as far as I am concerned.

That is the older 4.12 version, I suggest downloading the more recent 4.16 version which has many features added and bugfixes. It also incorporates browsing inside lha archives. You might also give a try to the beta 4.17 version, available here.

I use Dopus 4 mostly (very configurable) and also
DirWorks is another good one. I'm not sure what the
status is of DirWorks, it was Sharware (I think) but
that was many years ago. DirWorks is handy because it
will run from floppy on any system.

i have an auto unpacking program from epic marketing that i bought about 12yrs ago, called I.D.A.F.Y

its better that typing all those commands in :-)

i have it on a cd in adf format to preserve it.

If you install DOpus4 then also get hold of someone elses config file. Saves you all the time of setting it up. Great tool DOpus. I find 4 is classic and so easy to use...

PS There was also InfoNexus which was fairly usable.

What are you going to do if you don't have some of the programs that they have configured their button banks to use? Or if you don't keep things in the same places? Customising your own install is the best way to go, imo, and you also learn more about how it all works.

Giggles... Sorry... Just edit out the buttons. For a novice its agreat start. Trying to configure buttons to open JPGs and LHA files etc etc can be a struggle. With so many configs you can pick and choose. The only real issue is the VOLS and when something isn`t recognised you can simply edit from the box. Not rocket science. I have mine configured from 1995 and has grown and grown like a brain. But I still imported the odd cfg file to see how others do it. I also have DOpus companion to help plus all the various other disk help files on buttons. Also folk have sent me their configuration files to have a look at how they configured DOpus.

I just wish I had had the internet back then cus it would have certainly saved a load of time seing how to set up all the various tools. Go get a config and see how they work. As long as you back up your own it really will do no harm to your computer what so ever.

I use DOpus as a one stop shop for everything on my Amigas and the first thing I do when setting up another machine is load in my DOpus brain config file. Then simply edit out the drives for that machine... takes just a minute.

Config... Drives... whoops not there Search ... Then rename the button and SAVE... Easy peasy.... [ giggles sorry ]

You also need to get also the various Tools in C. And remember the little fold on a button means there is another link under the button which you right click. You can see what buttons you have from the Config menu. I have a button for Config. I tend to avoid the drop down menus which also can be configured to run all your programs.
