Decided against a minimig....
« on: March 13, 2008, 07:25:20 PM »
And got myself an Asus Eee PC instead. Minimig costs in the region of £130. Got my Eee PC second hand (3 months old) for £185 inc delivery.

I can play my Amiga classics using WinUAE on the move with integrated screen, keyboard, touchpad, full sound from internal speakers, not limited to OCS games etc etc...

I can also boot Aros if I want, full Windows install if I want, OS X (if I want to be illegal). Surely this makes more sense at the current price of the Minimig?

Please tell me if i'm wrong.
Chris (aka tonyyeb)

Minimig is essentially a hobbyist toy for those who want to play with an A500 + some nifty features. Low production volume (and limited demand compared to something like an Eee PC) means it can't compare from a financial standpoint. (I like the MiniMig, but since I have a few OCS Amigas to play with, and nothing really to contribute from a development standpoint I probably won't own one.)

Heck -- I just helped my girlfriend put together a super-fast (for her needs) dual core, with nice heatsinks, CM case, decent RAM, quiet fans, Seasonic PSU, etc, etc, for less money than I've seen some A1200 turbocards go for lately.

Well, I'd prefer a second hand A1200 from eBay :-)

I'm undecided on the Minimig ATM.  I am more interested in Natami . . .  :-D

If I ever were to buy an Amiga again, I would not get a MiniMig either. Whilst I appreciate any effort to help the community I would much prefer NatAmi (if it gets released). A full Amiga computer with SuperAGA (16MB Chip Mem!). The Amiga that should of got released years ago.

Emulation is always going to be cheaper than specialised hardware, especially considering the difference in power of new PCs and old Amigas.

What you've got to ask yourself is why isn't emulation enough for everybody? Some complain that it doesn't feel the same, but I would say the main issue is that its a dead end. Minimig, despite its current limitations, has definite room for growth.

I like the EeePC too, just don't try and justify it as an Amiga purchase.

I think you're right.

It's all got to come down to what you want to do - how you want to do it - and what you can afford.

The only reason I bought my 2000 last month was because I was finally in a position to spend the money on what is essentially nostalgia.   If that didn't come through - my B plan was to jumble together spare parts and run linux booting into UAE and work towards getting some cheap hardware replacements to run Amithlon on it.

I think the minimig is a great idea, but I probably won't be buying one for now either.

If you want to support a fully operation AROS on a ASUS EEE PC, you can donate here.
