Last of its kind .... an A3000 resource
« on: February 17, 2008, 03:10:42 AM »
While cleaning out some things I found a nic card that I thought was exstint. I've noticed a few posts here and there about people looking for zipp memory chips for the A3000 motherboard and it made me recall where I got the ram to populate my two systems.

I was fortunate enough to rescue dozens of Ungermann Bass ethernet cards from disposal some time around 1997. According to the one remaining card I have, they were manufactured in 1992 and used 4 chips of the same zipp memory that the A3000 uses. I of course striped them and filled my A3000's. I've not been able to find any info on this card on the internet. I'll try to post a picture or two this weekend. You might keep an eye out for very old nic hardware. If you're lucky enough to run across any, you might donate them to a fellow A3000 owner.

The cards are labled Ungermann Bass Assy # 33549-02(V788). Other than the serial number and "Assembled in Hong Kong", there are no other identifing marks or lables.

I have found ZIP chips in many unlikely places.  Of course, some bridgeboards and A2000 accelerators have them.  But, I did find them in some peecies, and, some odd Un*x workstations.
I had aquired a large stash of them, and at that time the only thing I had that needed them was my A3000UX.  I fully populated it, and then sold all the rest of the ZIPs to a guy who just ended up bending all the pins :pissed:

I already typed this once.  Let's see if XOOPS rejects it again.

I once spent a whole Saturday desoldering ZIPs from a couple of dead bridgeboards.  What else are you going to do with them?

Let's say you have an A2000 with a 020 board with 8M of ZIPs on it, a 8M Zorro II board with DIPs, and an A3000 with 8M of ZIPs.  Well, I took the ZIPs off the 020 board and put them in the A3000 and put the Zorro II RAM card in the A2000.  There's no better solution.

I'm not slamming you at all, but as a one time professional repair person and some one who's been keeping an eye out for a bridge board of my own, it's just kind of a sad story to me.

Some times it's just too expensive to bring back dead equipment, but I can't count the times I've repaired and kept items deemed "hopeless" by even other repair centers.

What the heck is going on tonight?  I've had to type this three times now, due to OS4 crashes!

Anyway, I know you weren't slamming me, I realised too late that it sounded like I was being nasty and 'counterslamming' you!  sorry..  :pint:

I do still have those bridgeboards, ready to be reassembled, somewhere...  Right now my basement looks like a warzone and finding things is downright impossible.  But, if I stumble across any bridgeboards, I'll let you know.
Are you looking for a particular one?  I have several.  There is an 8088 one that I think I can find readily as it's in an A2000 that I can find.  Those don't have ZIPs though :)

Didn't any one mention that OS4 has bug that make is unstable with wind-chills below 32F? :-P

Now that we've got the non-slamming and non-counter slamming all put away, we should be good.

In particular I was interested in the 386sx version for some modding. (I think that's the one with zipp memory). Less so the 88 and 286 versions, but being the hardware hacker I am those would be fun to mess with if they didn't run me too much. If you find a dead 386, definitly keep me in mind.
