SATA OT I know
« on: February 14, 2008, 04:40:14 PM »
Ok guys, I have come here because of the brain power.
O am good with some stuff but not so good at other.

So this is the question,

I got my PC up and running a nice new Athlon 64bit Dual Core 3800+ system, at the moment I have 2 x 80Gig HD, 1 DVD burner and 1 CD burner, reason the DVD burner don't take CD`s for some pathetic reason.
Right now on the mobo Asus A8N-SLI-SE there are 4 SATA connectors that I can make good use of.
Is SATA faster than IDE?
Do I need one SATA drive for example Linux.
What I intend to do is this Primary IDE Windows XP pro, Secondary Data HD for XP.
SATA Linux.

TIA,

Mike.

Using Nero perhaps? Some versions have this tab to choose between CD and DVD, which is kind of easy to miss.

The interface is, but the HDDs are so slow that unless if you use striped RAID you won't see much difference between IDE and SATA HDD. Typically SATA HDDs are slightly faster due to some other improvements such as NCQ.

No.

For IDE the latest standard is ATAPI-7 (aka Ultra ATA/133) which offers up to 133MB/s transfer speed.

The latest SATA technology (often called SATA-II) can do up to 300MB/s. The old SATA standard was 150MB/s.

These speeds are of course theoretical, but it's pretty clear what's the fastest.
Theology is just a debate over who to frame for creating reality.

Ok thank for that guys.
Yes I am using Nero 8.0
I do choose the DVD option but it just some times sees a CD but I can never get the data from it. I have used a DVD cleaner but still the same, it has been like that ever since I got it.

just a word of advice:
my father had Asus A8NE, and his 4 SATA ports died because chipset fan stopped spinning (after making terrible noise for a while). He ignored it for long time, so it overheated and SATA ports broke down. It is a very common problem on that motherboard (check google)
Better sorry than worry.
