Positive Amiga stuff
« on: January 07, 2008, 10:36:27 PM »
Getting a bit down reading all the OS5 threads, so I thought I'd remind you all of some positive stuff happening in the Amiga community.

First of all, it's only two weeks until the deadline for the EFIKA port of AROS:
http://thenostromo.com/teamaros2/?number=46
Does anyone here have an Efika or intend on buying one? According to this topic on MorphZone they're currently available for $99 USD, which is fairly cheap:
http://www.morphzone.org/modules/newbb_plus/viewtopic.php?forum=2&topic_id=5549

Secondly, the progress being made on Traveller (the new web browser for AROS) is great to see. The developer Rob/Robert N writes a blog where you can read about his AROS work, which is frequently updated (new entry today - 7th January):
http://cataclysm.cx/category/traveller/

We also have the imminent release of fully assembled Minimig 1.1 boards by ACube. Great price and should be less than two weeks away. Front page on their website too, which is fantastic to see:
http://www.acube-systems.biz/eng/index.php

Most exciting of all for me is Clone-A, but we'll have to wait a little longer for that.

Any Amiga stuff you're looking forward to?

EDIT: Quick note, any references to 'two weeks' in this post are not in any way linked to comments by the one we do not mention by name! :-D

Glad to be of service Firedawg! :-D
So what Amiga projects are you looking forward to? Do you intend to buy a Deneb USB card for your classic Amigas when it is released, for example?

I'm with you there mate! An AGA compatible Clone-A would solve many Amiga problems and provide a great platform to build off.  Last I heard we will even be able to run Minimig code on the device. I just wish we had some more news about it.

AROS/Minimig/Clone-A FTW! :-D

@HenryCase

I'm steadily completing the first of 3 Minimigs and tweaking my two Efika 5200B's, and patiently waiting for AROS and MorphOS to take advantage of the full functionality of the board.  The Deneb USB card would be a definite addition to my hardware want list.

I do appreciate you re-direction on topics.  I do not have the hardware to take advantage of OS4, so I do not preoccupy my time with it.  But, most on A-Org do.  There are so many other things to discuss and share.  Get me one of those PPC cards and maybe I will be singing another tune. ;-)

You are right, the future of Amiga outside of KMOS (Amiga Inc) looks brighter than ever.  Thanks for the perspective.

Sounds cool Mike. Please let us know when you've finished your Minimigs (pictures too, please), I still get a buzz out of seeing ones that members of the community have completed (i.e. all of them, so far).

Efikas will be awesome little machines when AROS can run on it, not long now. How's MorphOS 2.0 development going? I saw some videos of it in action, I hope it's not too long before it's released. How are you tweaking your Efikas?

I've heard quite a few people on Amiga forums say they'd like the Deneb USB, I've got a feeling it will be a successful product (though I suppose in modern Amiga terms any released product is a success!).

Yes, I agree.
I tried AROS for the first time tonight (using the VmwAROS/VMware Player combination as it seemed the easiest way into it). Not bad at all, though I didn't get audio working. Bit more UI polish (Start Menu in particular), Traveller and UAE integration and I think it will find many more Amiga fans. I'm going to perservere with it, I'd like to start submitting bug reports to the devs to do my bit for the OS.

Good to see your dedication brother (in the Amiga sense)! :-D I forgot about IOWASURFER's scandoublers, d'oh. I think Deneb USB and those scandoublers are going to be the most popular classic Amiga upgrades in 2008 (if they get released this year).

(Dare I say it) Is anyone looking forward to MorphOS 2? Personally I reckon it looks pretty cool. Is the red/blue divide as strong as it was in the past?

@HenryCase

I thought that the New Years messages from Elbox and Hyperion promise positive thing.  Both companies have a proven track record for delivering.

I think the content of these two paragraph is positive.

Hyperion
Quote
Building on that work, Hyperion is committed to continue development of AmigaOS 4.x in the year 2008 by drastically expanding both the feature-set of AmigaOS 4.x and the range of supported PowerPC based target hardware.

Elbox

During the recent weeks, we have received many inqueries concerning our plans in reference to the releasement of AmigaOS4 for Classic Amiga computers. Thank you very much for all these messages and your interest. All we can say as for now is that our designer team is very busy preparing the new hardware products for Classic Amiga, which will allow to show the enhanced potential of OS4. Year 2008 will be very interesting and fruitful for Classic Amiga users.

Well, it depends on who you listening to, MorphOS people or the hardware people, neither agree on a release date.  The tweaking of my Efika's is mostly on the software side with Linux installs.  Not much to brag about, but I hope to focus more when AROS and MorphOS 2 become available.

I have been tweaking my 5200B with a thin layer of dust.

Firedawg, what linux distro are you using?
Did you have trouble with setting up the sound?
Have you been able to play any video media?

I have found that the linux installs I have tested are a little heavy and leave almost no free memory.

I never did get the audio to function correctly, the best I could do was a choppy playback.

I have been able to playback full screen video at 1024*768.

I have built a way cool case though, does that count as tweaking?

I'm looking forward to MOS, and AROS.  I hope to gain a better appreciation of my toy.

I hope we all see continued positive Amiga things in 2008.

OpenSuse works pretty well with the Efika. I run Rox as the desktop and Oroborus was the WM and its pretty spiffy.

More ram would make a huge difference, though.

I can't wait for MorphOS on the Efika.
