A2000 CPU slot for A500?
« on: January 06, 2008, 11:05:54 AM »
Not a Zorro slot, but CPU slot. Is there any hardware out there to do this? Even a hack/selfmade project?

If not, for the hardware techies...would this be electrically possible to do?...

there are tower kits which provide a a2000 type fast slot for the a500, so it's definitely possible. but probably not so easy.

Actually it's dead easy, as the A500-side connector is allmost identical in pin-out to the A2000 CPU slot.
1. Make an announcment.
2. Wait a while.
3. Check if it can actually be done.
4. Wait for someone else to do it.
5. Start working on it while giving out hillarious progress-reports.
6. Deny that you have ever announced it
7. Blame someone else

@gwion

no, that's a accelerator which sits on the 68000 slot. Can be used in both an A500 and A2000. He's talking about an adaptor which will provide a A2000 style CPU slot (a2000s have special fast CPU slot for accelerators) so that he can use a2000 accelerators like this on the a500.

ps: please edit your link.

It's the way to go.  Those CPU socket accelerators don't *really* fit inside the A500, and cause severe cooling issues.

GVP made an accelerator/SCSI controller for the A500 side connector called the A530. As Kronos mentioned, if the A500 side connector is identical to the A2000 fast slot, then perhaps GVP re-designed an A2000 fast slot accelerator card like this one to to fit the A500? A friend of mine had one of these. Great little unit.

My hack

Still working on a schematic... If I make one, I would like to have a PCB built.

@fita1100d

Great hack! I'm thinking of single CPU slot, designed well enough to mount a card lying down inside a standard A500. A quick measure up of parts I have here suggest it'll fit ok. It may even be possible to adapt a small zorro II card as well as a CPU card...

Anyone have an idea where to get the card connector strips from? I have done a quick search on the Dick Smith and Jaycar sites here in Australia with no luck...

Agreed, great hack @fita1100d!

I would be interested in building a CPU slot only adapter too - finally a way to get an 040 into my A500!

I haven't understood what kind of connector you refer to, not the slots but "pins" themselves?
In any case, try asking to electronic components resellers in your city, I bought all the items from non-online sellers. Even found 86 and 100 pin slots :-)

Then you mainly have to compare the schematics of your A500 motherboard revision with the ones of the B2000: most of the signals are the same, while some other ones require a little of TTL logic ICs for generating them.

Please note that, if you need the 7 MHz clock, the A500+ motherboard (rev. 8A) supplies it to the expansion connector, while the later A500 one (rev. 6A) doesn't, but it has a jumper that, when closed, makes it available, so it's simpler because you don't need a TTL gate :-)

Micronik A500 Busboard

Well - I have have one of those laying around new and unused in the original box.

I bought it for 250,- DM back in the ninetees when Micronik dissolved and when there was talk about an version of the CSPPC for the A2000 - wanted to build the worlds fastest A500 with CSPPC.

Wanted to have the whole tower kit, but all that was left at Micronik for this purpose back then was the busboard...
All the best,
