Speed difference between GVP 1230 an Blzizard 1230
« on: September 05, 2009, 12:21:02 PM »
Why is the GVP 1230 Mark II slower than a Blizzard 1230 IV?

Is it because that the memory of Blizzard 1230 has more lines to address the memory 72 pins vs 64 pins?

I have both cards I compare them with 16 MB GVP memory and 16 MB EDO memory.

The Blizzard does have faster memory access, but not because the modules have more pins...

Correspondingly I seem to recall that some of the Apollo cards have faster access still for the same CPUs (that may be the '040 models - my memory is rather hazy).

There's more to the speed the CPU accesses the memory than the number of lines it has - I don't know very much about the GVP board but it could be that the memory chips GVP use simply run slower than EDO SIMMs. I'm going on hazy memory myself here, but ISTR the Apollo cards are faster because they're synchronous, whereas the Blizzard cards are asynchronous, with extra buffer logic used to interface between buses.
