Double ntsc in winUAE?
« on: October 20, 2007, 04:05:51 PM »
My double ntsc and double pal modes all come out looking like this:

which really screws me up because all my programs want to open in a double mode of some sort, and every time I open a new file in Brilliance it wants to change the screen mode to double something.

How can I get these modes to work?

May I ask why you are using these modes?  The standard PAL/NTSC resolutions should automatically be scan doubled.

Either way, I would suggest using a P96 mode over the native custom chips.

Cheers,

In WinUAE Properties, Display, change Line Mode to normal.

Also try the "correct aspect ratio" tick box.

Make sure you dont have "force low resolution" ticked.

As I mentioned, a lot of the programs try to open in these modes because that was the way my old A1200 was set up.  So it'd be easier if this would just display properly.  Because the graphics are all screwy, I can't read anything to figure out how to change these programs :C

What is a P96 mode?  This is a rip of my old amiga, so I don't know what any of the fancy high res modes are that AIAB some how manages.  There's DBLNTSC, DBLPAL some multi sync modes and the standard ntsc and pal.

o Try to remove horizontal and vertical centering?

o Use a newer version of WinUAE as yours is old.

o If all else fails, removed the dblpal and dblntsc monitor drivers from DEVS:/Monitors and move them back to STORAGE:/Monitors

Edit: I just tried the latest version of WinUAE and DBLPAL and DBLNTSC modes dont look correct. (Not that they really need to under emulation).

P96 mode is an emulation of an Amiga graphics card.

Installation is explained here:

http://guide.abime.net/wb3.1/chap5.htm

One stage this guide doesnt say is that *I think* there is a newer version of UAEGFX display driver in the latest WinUAE archive / installer than the one in Picasso96, might want to use that.

Folks think about this for a minute dblNTSC mode is just an NTSC mode designed to display at double the rate and act like a built-in flicker fixer. WinUAE does this automatically with its 640x400 mode so there is no reason to want to use this monitor mode in the first place, NTSC with the right dispay options does the same thing producing a non-flickering NTSC 640x400 mode..

1280x400 is a doubled (super sampled 640x400 mode).. If you look at the original hardware you might notice vertically you don't see all the pixels all the time.. My advise is to remove dblntsc mode because 640x400 interlaced doesn't flicker with the right options set in WinUAE either..

That's my advice anyway, it's not really a BUG...It's a chipset behavior..Running WinUAE displays in DOUBLE line mode flicker fixes the dislay anyway (scan doubling).

You can then go into Brilliance and just set the default mode to regular NTSC or PAL 640x400 (not doubled).

No reason why WinUAE could'nt be made to look correct in these modes though ;-)

I totally get why there's no need for the modes, it's just I've got programs that I can't change the modes in, because I can't read anything.

Will putting the monitors in the storage folder force these programs to run in another mode?

Toni Wilen, the author of WinUAE says that these modes do operate as designed. However he has made changes recently to SuperHiRes emulation that will make dblpal and dblntsc look correct.

Wait for the next release of WinUAE beta (1.4.5?) release due in a few more days.

Update from Toni

Status report: Unfortunately it will take more than few days before next beta will be released.

I am currently fixing/updating hires/superhires sprite support and it isn't trivial update.

Previously for example hires sprites would be converted to lores and then doubled back to hires if program used lores bitplanes -> looks crappy. Good example is Super Stardust AGA. (ship and score texts are hires sprites but currently they are reduced to lores quality..)

Beta 4:

- fixed completely broken joystick buttons (b3)
- input panel mouse wheel "buttons" added. Sends button/key down event, waits one frame, sends button/key up event
- started implementing "real" ROM image ROM scanner support (2xROM setups like CDTV extended ROM or A1200, Nordic Power etc..)
- big superhires resolution and hires/superhires sprite update
* full SuperHires resolution support (without dropped pixels)
* Doublescan hires modes are now also properly displayed (hires doublescan is really "half-scan" superhires mode)
* Replaced lores checkbox with lores/hires/superhires selection.
** SuperHires mode uses 4xdoubling in lores, 2xdoubling in hires and no doubling (and no dropped pixels) in superhires.
** Hires = old non-lores mode, 2xdoubling in lores, no doubling in hires and drop every other pixel in superhires (+)
** Lores = no doubling in lores, drop every other pixel in hires (+), superhires not supported
+ = lores smooth filtering supported
NOTE: regular (non-doublescan) superhires aspect ratio is wrong, use filters if you need correct aspect ratio
NOTE2: interlaced doublescan modes are buggy
* AGA superhires sprite resolution supported (previously hires only)
* hires sprites are not converted to lores (and then doubled again..) anymore if screen is doubled (lores program, hires/shres in GUI) Check Super Stardust AGA if you want to see the difference.
* AGA hires/shres "smooth" scroll BPLCON1 bits supported
* OCS/ECS (no ECS Denise) uses old code path = no performance change. ECS-Denise and AGA uses new more complex and slower sprite/bitplane drawing code path (optimization still to do..)
* Probably breaks something...
