A1200 Mediator Systems... Startup times??
« on: October 29, 2007, 06:31:17 PM »
Ok I need your startup times to see if my system startup is abnormally slow.

My Hardware specs are: A1200T Blizzard 603+ PPC 175mhz 68060 50mhz 256mb RAM. 4GB IDE HDD, 9GB SCSI HDD, IDE CDRW OS3.9 Mediator LT4 Voodoo3 P96 GFX card.

I use Amigasys for OS3.9, 3.1 roms. Warpup with Warp3D. I boot into 800x600 16bit. I dont use BPPCFIX or any Emulator ROM hacks.

My WB from Cold boots in 1min 48secs.

How does this compare to similar systems out there?

TIA

That doesn't look right to me.
My current system is a bit wierd at the min, because it's optimised for a Blizzard 1260 but currently has a Blizzard 1230 installed.
30 seconds is probably right at a guess.

I am using a FastATA interface though so that might make the difference.
I'm sure others here could say if that is the case or not.

Thx for the reply!
I think the PPC part of my Blizzard will bring some extra boot overheads compared to your 1230.

Anyone out there with a BPPC willing to post a time?

I have managed to shorten boot time to 58 secs by turning off the MAPROM option in the BPPC.

Mine takes 30 secs to Blizkick, then another 30 secs to WB. The boot up time is somewhat slower than it could be, due to having removed both internal IDE and floppy drive from the system (my system drive is SCSI with SFS). My config is BPPC 603e+@210MHz, 060@50MHz, 256 megs of ram, BlizzardVision and OS3.9 w/ CGX4, Genesis, WarpUP.

thanks mikolas.

It would seem that the mediator/gfx card is the major hardware difference between our systems....

With a bit of luck, I will have a 160mhz PPC 50mhz 060 128meg by Wednesday.
Will have a look then.

The rest of the system is as follows.

WB 3.9 BB2, 3.1 roms installed.
Rom blizkicked.
Two ide hd's one 40 gig and one 80 gig connected using a FastATA .
One CD rewriter and one DVD rewriter also connected to the FastATA device.
Mediator SX, cards connected as follows.
FastEthernet, Terratec Audio, Spider USB, Pixel Pro TV and a Voodoo 5500.
P96 2.1B (I think)
USB card reader.

There is alos a lot of other bits and bobs installed on the software side to speed the machine up.
There is a guide on this site by AmigaMance, which I have followed.

Wow, that's slow. My 3000T with Cyberstorm MK3 '060 and Mediator scans 2 SCSI buses and reboots twice with the latest BoingBag updates and still boots in less than 30 seconds. One thing you can do is turn off multiple LUNs and disable any SCSI addresses you don't use if you have SCSI settings for this. Also, you can set the flag for the last SCSI unit/device in the RDB with HDToolbox or a similar RDB tool. I believe HDToolbox does this automatically when you run it but you must click on the last hard drive (by SCSI address) and then click save changes to hard drive. Other RDB tools allow this to be set manually. Setting this LAST_DEVICE flag keeps SCSI addresses after that from being scanned on bootup. It's especially handy for SCSI CD-ROMs, scanners and zip drives that do not have a RDB and should not be scanned. You want to have all your SCSI hard drives at the lower SCSI addresses for this to work and having your boot hard drive as address 0 speeds up things also.

P.S. The LAST_DEVICE flag may not be the correct name and I've seen it called different names in different RDB programs but I think you get the picture. Someone will be along shortly to correct me ;-). I'm not on my Amiga right now or I would look it up.

Well with a fully loaded 030 and a CD drive (not working yet) it takes about 15 secs on 3.1 OS.
I think maybe it's because the card takes a while to get working?

Just plugged in a floppy drive. The bootup time went from 60 seconds total to 40 seconds. I think adding IDE terminator would shave a few seconds still, but I don't bother as 40 seconds from cold start, including BlizKick, is pretty reasonable for me.
