Removing FPU
« on: October 17, 2007, 03:39:02 PM »
I got a 2dn hand AmiTek Hawk 8mb ram card with a socket (PLCC? the one in the square case)and a 33mhz crystal.

Ide like to stick it into my Apollo 1230/50 card.

What is the safest way to remove the FPU from the card and place into mine?

Cheers.

Sometimes you can get a thin ziptie and thread it through one of the slotted corners, under the chip and up the opposite corner, then just pull it out with that.

If you don't want to invest in a proper PLCC extraction tool, you can construct a rudimentary tool from a piece of wire, but note that the wire must be really stiff. Just bend the wire into a V, then bend the ends to small hooks which go under the chip when you insert the tips into the slots in the corners of the socket.
