Got a MAS player or Delfina Flipper? This is for you.
« on: July 05, 2003, 11:53:07 AM »
Hi,

I write a HTTP/Shoutcast MPEG streamer called (rather creatively)
Streamer. Yesterday, I added some support for MHI drivers for MAS
players and Delfina Flipper (via MHI mpeg.device). Since I don't have
this hardware, I'd like some brave individuals to try it and see if it
works!

Are you up for it?

Grab the new version of Streamer:

http://www.tigger1.demon.co.uk/amiga/streamer.lha

Please write back and tell me how it goes!

-D00kie!

When I'm finished rehousing my Amiga 4000 in a big tower case I'll see if it works with my Delfina Lite.

One problem I have found using Amplifier to stream off the net with the Delfina is it doesn't support the lower Kbps rates common with dialup connections (e.g. 16,24 Kbps). Rates such as 96 Kbps seem to work fine however. I believe this to be a limitation of the delfinampeg.device rather than Amplifier. As your software will use delfinampeg.device as well, it may have the same limitations with the Delfina.

I contacted the author about this a while ago but haven't heard from him on the subject. I may end up picking through the code myself as it seems like only a minor issue.

A4000D: 030/25MHz, 16MB RAM, Indivision Mk1, 8GB CF as HDD and IDE CD-ROM.

Amiga user since 1992.

Hello D00kie ;)

I have a delfina flipper sound card and as soon as I saw your post I downloaded streamer and installed it. To obe honest, I've never used it, but it looks quite small and useful. Idecided to give it a try but I haven't had any luck with it.

I'm on a 56k modem connection and I iwanted to hear www.9412.com/9412lo.pls.

So far, the modem tries to connect, but the connection is lost. I selected MHI player in the eprefs (just like in AmigaAMP, that indeed works). I was looking for an option to disable AHI as MHI would have delfina's DSP to play the stream, bit there's no option to do that.

I'll keeptrying with another radio stations and will post here the results.

Thanks for the effort!

Hello @Colmiga

Good information you post there, maybe that's why Stream does not seem to work here.

BTW, delfinampeg.device, delfmpeg, MHI Driver, etc. all programs written by Michael Henke will no longer be updated as he left the Amiga a few days ago. :-(

So, do not expect him to reply your emails or even bothering toupdate his own programs :-(

Hope someone takes over his developments.

Dragster

I would love to try this on my Melody, as I'm still using streamer V1 (which is great hear for nearly zero CPU usage to listen to Nectarine), but as the new version requires the Reaction stuff, I cannot run it here. Bad luck.

Hi Dragster,

One little usage tip:

Streamer doesn't get the playlist file (pls) from the website. If
you config. your web browser for streamer, then type the URL in the
web browser, it will play. Or you could use a download program like
HTTPGET to get the playlist file, then launch Streamer and tell it to
play that.

New, from the menu, is for playing an MP3 directly from a web
server, like http://www.server.com/something.mp3

Maybe I'll have streamer go and get the pls file in a future
version! A good idea, I think! ;-)

I have a question for you: Doesn't the Flipper H/W play through the
sound card, or does it go through AHI again? The AHI stuff in streamer
prefs is only for the mpega.library player. I don't tell the MHI
interface anything except which library to use. I'm not sure how MHI
works.

Heya D00kie, thanks for the info... I guess I will RTFM before asking anything hehe.

regarding your question, well.. whatever gets decoded by the DSP does not use AHI, for exmaple, mp3 dcoding using MHIdriver (delfmpeg.device), the rest of things go through AHI...

If AHI is used only for mpega.device, why don't you ghost that option when the user selects any MHI for example? :)

Cheers

Hello D00kie:

I configured the mime types in IBrowse and it's working now (selecting download as mime type), Streams opens and it starts to play, even the shoutcast logo appears in the streamer GUI and modem dl light keeps ON but I can't hear anything... I selected Mpegplayer: MHI Mpeg.device. I know I have MHI working as it works just fine with AmigaAMP.

Any ideas?

Hi D00kie...

Well, i tried toplaythe same radio stream but this time I selected the highest bandwidth one although I'm on 56K diaul up and it worked just fine for a moment (then is stops, 'cause I do not have enough bandwidth to keep up) but it works :)

This looks like a bug in delfmpeg.device as colmiga stated before and sadly, now nobody will fix this 'cause delfmpeg.device developer <> has left the Amiga a few days ago :-(

The MAS 3507 chip  doesn`t support the lower rates often used for streaming. (Just looking at the data sheet ..looks like 32kbit\s @32khz is the minimum it supports for mp3 format. ). Unfortunatly, it`s a hardware limit..
Maybe this is the same for the Delfina users here??? dunno what DSP it uses.

The only work around for this is to automatically spot a low rate stream and automatically switch to Mpega& AHI..
Maybe something like a minimum hardware rate in the Streamer prefs ???
On schedule, and suing

Grud!

I hate when something like this happens! I guess it wouldn't be too
hard to switch it to mpega.library if the bitrate is too low. This
kinda negates my efforts as I don't think there are too many Amigas
with HW decoders AND broadband/ISDN!!
