minimig and AmigaOS4
« on: September 07, 2007, 12:14:00 PM »
If a minimig variant was designed using a Xilinx Virtex4 (with PowerPC core) would it be capable of running AmigaOS4 (or MorphOS)?
Assuming a port not too much more difficult than for any other PPC hardware.  Ie.  Is the PowerPC core in the virtex much different to the ones used in A1's?

What would be the point. OS4 does not use the classic chipset.  OS4 would not to be tottaly re-wrriten im guessing to run on that hardware.

Those variants already exist. They are called Efika and SAM. Seriously, if it has a PPC core, it would no longer be a Minimig, would it?

The Minimig is a re-implementation of a classic 68k Amiga with custom chips, crammed onto a very small PCB. AmigaOS4 has got nothing to do with classic Amigas, it will never run on a classic Amiga either (unless you have a PPC accelerator). Next question please :-)

The point would be to create an open hardware platform that behaved like a classic style Amiga with PPC accelerator.  And add additional things like ATI Graphics, USB, Ethernet, IDE for the AmigaOS4/AROS/MOS side.

I am still interested in developing a 'super' minimig with the virtex4.  Does anyone here know if the powerPC core in this FPGA is close enough to a standalone PPC as used in AmigaOne / effica / Sam.

This makes no sense at all.

I have just bought me a new Nokia N95.  I think somebody should port OS4 to that.  :-D

Are you saying that AOS is not suitable as an embedded OS?

Embedded devices is such a global description, but for the most part, none of the Amiga like OSs, including AOS itself, aren't suitable.  Some embedded devices, you can shoehorn in a desktop OS, but that doesn't mean they are a embedded OS.

Windows is generally not thought of as an embedded OS.  But I have two CROs at work with 'embedded' windows.  I also see no  shortages of embedded devises with WindowsCE.

But windowsCE is not a desktop OS.  Its an embedded version of Windows.

So under that premise, OS4 would have to be re-written as an embeded OS and called something else.

Amiga Inc don't seem to have a problem with OS4 on classic PPC enabled hardware and Hyperion are said to be currently working on the classic port.

Does a classic Amiga PPC clone really not make any sense?

Could I replace the 68000 with a 486 and run AROS on it? :-P

Probably cheaper and less work to donate to AROS68K bounty.   :-D
