Could someone write a tutorial on how to make an ADF?
« on: September 21, 2007, 06:11:22 AM »
Hi all. I just posted this picture in the gallery

and Jeff mentioned that I should save the disk in an ADF considering its age. Thats true. Its probably a very rare piece of software these days, although, there isn't much call for Midi programs for the 'ol A1000. Someone on A.org here got a bunch of music software from me, and I wish I had kept his email because he wanted this connector and I couldn't find it at the time (it was buried in a box).

So, I've been looking around on the net some, and couldn't really find a good tutorial on how to take this disk and turn it into an ADF file. I was surprised to see that nobody had put one up in the tutorial section here on A.org.

So, is it possible for some kind soul to write a "how to make an ADF". I can do the whole thing on my A3000, right? Thanks.  :-)

how to make an ADF

Are you a developer and want to write your own program to create ADF files ?

If not, then IMHO no tutorial is needed. Just use your favourite ADF-creation program, choose the drive the disk is in, select a path and file name you want to write to and click on whichever button means "do it".

Search Aminet for ADF programs, there are lots of them.

For personal reasons I'd suggest TSGUI. :-D

Bye,
Thomas

I use ADFBlitzer - extremely basic and doesn't report if there's an error, but very quick to use.

Thanks Matt. I'll try them both then.

I have another question now. With old abandoned software like this, is there someone who has a website with a collection of these types of programs that I should send a copy?

Should I try and reach the program author first, if possible to get permission?

Certainly. Otherwise it'd be illegal, no matter how old the software is.

My, that was easy! I tried Thomas' TSGUI first. No problem. Put disk in, click, click, click. Wait. There you go, Soundscape.ADF waiting in your RAM:

I booted the program up (still boots, program is 1.4) to see who the author was.

It was Todor Fay, if anyone has heard of him.

I even played a few of the songs that came with it. Sounds a little better than Deluxe Music. There was a classical piece, a jazz tune, and some weird (but funny) space tune.

I should do this for the rest of my original disks!

Tried googling a bit and it appears he worked on DirectX audio API.

Boy you're fast Piru. I googled too and found his company in Southern California! I got to leave a message in his telephone inbox. Hopefully, by Monday when he gets back to work, he'll call me back.

I very much prefer TransADF-GUI.  It is quick and it has an output window which reports anyting unusual.

Well, I managed to reach Todor Fay! I called his company number while I was driving about and he was the first person to pick up the phone (must be a small company).

He was very friendly and was rather flattered that someone still had an interest in his old software.

I asked him what it was like to write software for Amiga back in the 80's and he said it was a lot of fun.  :-)
