Installing hard drive on Amiga 500
« on: August 31, 2007, 11:10:06 AM »
A while ago I got myself an AlfaPower HDD Enclosure for the Amiga 500 - I thought its about time to put it to good use. I have a bog standard Amiga 500, with 1 meg ram upgrade, and Kickstar ROMs version 1.3.

I have installed a hard drive in the enclosure and connected it to the amiga. What do I need to be able to format the drive and install workbench 1.3?

PS I dont even have workbench 1.3 yet :(

Anyway, thanks guys!

You need a bootable floppy with the systemfiles on it. (Format command, L: fastfilesystem etc.) You need hdtoolbox, or hdinsttools. Watch out for the version numbers, because some of this utils from a version working only above KS2.0. Anyway hdtoolbox has a version which correctly working under 1.3 .

Then you need to set some variables in hdtoolbox's icon tooltype. Mainly you need to change scsi.device to your controllers driver. And save. (if you don't now the name correctly you can search for it with scout or sysinfo 3.24)
And search for a device.

Then if you set corretly everything, you will see your hd in hdtoolbox. You can partition it and after a reboot you can format it.

Anyway don't forget to set the autoboot check in hdtoolbox for you drive. If you don't do this, your hdd can't boot. Anyway you need at last 1.3 Kick to autoboot an hdd.

I have tried looking for HDToolBox but did not find it.

Thanks again!

Hdinstools do the same as hdtoolbox. I think you can safely use it. Hdtoolbox is part of the Amiga os AFAIK above 2.0. (Don't know exatly maybe only from 3.0)
Anyway Workbech (AOS) 1.3 greatly recommended.
